If you've felt that the iMac's baseline $1,299 price was too high, you're in luck... to a degree. Apple has unveiled a new 21-inch iMac that lowers the cost of entry to a more palatable $1,099 (£899 in the UK). As you'd expect, though, there are a few catches involved in saving that much cash. To start with, you're getting the same low-voltage, 1.4GHz Core i5 processor that you find in the MacBook Air -- this isn't a powerhouse by any stretch. You'll also have to make do with a 500GB hard disk, although you can spring for 1TB disks (including a Fusion Drive) or a 256GB solid-state drive. The move isn't going to please those who were hoping for a full refresh of the iMac line, but that may not happen until Intel launches desktop-class Broadwell processors. This system will mostly be appealing to schools and anyone else who wants a complete Apple desktop for the lowest price possible.

Apple makes a good product, but they like their products waaaay too much for me to buy one until it's a few generations old.

I just can't understand how I can get a computer for much less than that with better specs... It just makes no sense to me at all.

It won't be an all in one, won't be that thin, won't come with a monitor, won't run OS X, won't have custom built components, etc.

FWIW, this computer does not interest me in the least. Next mac I get will be either a new Mac Mini or the 27" iMac spec'd nicely.

The commas stand for "or" not "and"

The linked computer is not as thin, has an external power supply, bluetooth 4.0 is optional, 4 GB standard RAM (iMac has 8), no camera, no 802.11ac, etc.

The motherboard is not an off the shelf component.

I'm not saying the HP is less of a computer than the low end iMac, it's not an apples to apples comparison though.

Looks about the same once you figure in the stands

The horror

Even if you add it, it will still be cheaper.

They never are in any mass manufactured computer.

The Apple isn't a bad machine, but it sure is overpriced for what you get.

You act like it's apple's to apple's, then when i point out the differences you act like it's not really a difference.

You tell me what looks better:

There is no doubt the Apple looks better. Just not $400 better. My own opinion of course.

I've told you enough. Why don't you tell me how that pricing is justified? Maybe I'm just not a big enough baller to piss away the difference.
