Iraqi Militants seize refinery - oil markets up

Here we go....
"The refinery, located in the northern city of Baiji, is the biggest producer of refined fuel for Iraq’s domestic markets. The attack doesn’t affect production or exports from the country’s main oil fields and facilities in the south. The attack, however, underlined concerns over the situation in the country."
“The refinery, which supplies Baghdad with gasoline and diesel, shows that the situation in Iraq is not getting better,” said Phil Flynn, senior market analyst at Price Futures Group. “Oil companies are pulling out nonessential personnel even in the south of the country ... Oil companies are trying to export while the exporting is good yet the possibility of an oil shock is rising [if] the south of Iraq starts to fall.”
Going forward, I think Obama supporters should pay higher prices at the pump in order to subsidize lower gas prices for Republicans. Works for me.

Is this a Kurdish city?
No, it appears to be a Sunni one, but it's not far from the Kurdish region. It appears ISIS is on the verge of cutting off all of Baghdad's gasoline, refined oil, water, and power. The city could officially be under siege within days.

So why does a refinery being seized in Iraq affect the oil market?

Increase in precautionary demand drives prices up

This is a refining facility, not a production facility.

I was specifically told by a highly-informed person on this very board that smokescreens to cover "what's really going on" don't exist.

ISIS Fails To Seize Iraq’s Largest Oil Refinery
So if Iraq drives out ISIS and the country becomes a stable partner in the region, does that mean we did a good job in Iraq?
