First of all is Ultra HD an actual new technology or just a marketing term?

Any of you have a review on curved TV's?

Ultra HD is the same thing as 4K and yes that really is the new technology. I'm pretty it's basically 4xs the amount of pixels we currently have for regular HD. It's going to take a few years for anythig to even be filmed in it so it's really not too practical to get right now. But once they do, it will be awesome.

The curved stuff I think is just trying something new out. I can't really say I think that would make a huge difference than aesthetics and saying look I have a curved TV

Curved TV is about immersion

You need to sit the proper distance from it for it to be effective as well

They have been filming in 4k for a while now. Not everything, but quite a bit

Right now the issue is about delivering that content to the TV.

Almost.

4K refers to the four thousand lines of vertical resolution in a 4096x2160 image, and UHD carries the HD designation denoting that its image is natively 16x9 in aspect ratio

Curved TV is awesome if you have/need a wide viewing angle. Other than that, not much benefit beyond the "cool" factor.

I think it looks pretty damn cool

But to me it seems like it wouldn't have as wide of a viewing angle, wouldn't it? Say you're sitting way to the left. The right of the screen would look like its sort of curving toward you, but wouldn't the left curve sort of be almost non viewable?

Every review I've read has said the curved feature is unnecessary on a tv and doesnt enhance viewing experience. A curved screen works when you are immersed in a gigantic movie theater, not on a 60 inch tv screen.

The curved TV seems to me like the next 3D. Can people sitting at all angles good for a normal flat tv get the same quality as they would by sitting at the same angle to a curved screen?

As far as 4k... one that's out, how long before we start looking at 8k? (one article I've read says a raw 7680×4320 feed clocks in at 48Gigs per second!!)

Agreed

No, I saw one in the store a few weeks ago and thought it would suck to have to watch from an angle.

As long as we keep buying. The TV manufacturers are trying like hell to keep this from becoming a commodity space again like TVs used to be.

It's a band-aid on the poor viewing angles of LCD tech, which ironically can make it worse for the people not sitting in the, what, 1-foot wide sweet spot.

A curved screen in a movie theater is designed that way in order compensate for the focal characteristics of an anamorphic projection lens. In other words, on a flat screen, absolute focus is across the very middle, and the edges are out of focus. The light path is longer on the outside. To compensate, a curved screen allows light from the projector lens to uniformly paint across the screen at the same time and relative distance.

That being said, I'm in Vegas at the infoComm Expo and will go look at these today. I saw their booth yesterday as I was on my way to an appointment. Will see and ask about the benefits.
