So says Ian Morris in his book, War: What is it Good For? The Role of Conflict in Civilisation, from Primates to Robots

quote:

If the Roman empire could have been created without killing millions of Gauls, if the United States could have been built without killing millions of Native Americans … if conflicts could have been resolved by discussion instead of force, humanity would have had the benefit of larger societies. But that did not happen … People hardly ever give up their freedom, including their rights to kill and impoverish each other, unless forced to do so, and virtually the only force strong enough to bring this about has been defeat in war, or fear that such a defeat is imminent.

Right. Historically war has permanently settled all kinds of disputes.

Yep. That's why I always roll my eyes at the hippies who claim war solves nothing. War settles everything more often than not. And, if it doesn't, there's usually another war that follows close behind that finishes the job.

Sure war solves problems. Killing my neighbor's dog because he shits in my yard solves a problem. Most civilized people would rather solve it a different way though.

Or your neighbor could shoot you after you politely ask them to put their dog on a leash. That is the very definition of an irrational actor - who exist in politics all over the world.

International diplomacy doesn't solve everything. The so-called "middle ground" is a term made up by politicians who lack the stomach to do all that is necessary for their people. Peace is overrated. What has peace gotten us in the 70 years since World War II?

War can solve disputes it can cause growth in culture, can give advantages to the winner etc. It does many horrible things too.

but no matter what the consequences are I'm rarely for something that could potentially and usually does kill millions, death and destruction is not good for the world.

It's possible. Just look at what World War II did for our economy, or society, and our culture.

But only if you win.

Not to mention all the lives it created. We talk about all the deaths but what about all the births. My Dad & Mom were war babies. My Grandparents wouldn't have meet if not for WWII. I I thus would not be alive today if not for war.

Yay War!

Whatever good things war may bring us, it is never worth the cost of human life and our labor going towards a destructive purpose. War is something that you have to avoid at all costs and only thought of as a last resort measure.

Unfortunately it's not. OP has portrayed quite the bloodlust on this board. A while back, he said anarchists should be taken out to the woods and shot dead and he signed up for the military to kill his enemies.

Threads like this make me want to see the world burn. Humanity as a species isn't deserving of life. We to a large extent prefer destruction and death and we are a net negative to the planet as a whole. Wholesale slaughter and environmental decimation of the planet. I just don't think we are important enough in the whole scheme of things to justify keeping us around.

War is part of the human condition. It is in our nature to wage violence on a massive scale and has been true for our species since man first crawled out of the slime. It's wired in our genes. Since 1945, we have been fighting desperately to ignore that ancient instinct. And while we have the whole world has gone to hell. The Middle East is on fire, thousands die in regional conflicts almost every day, and nothing gets solved. It's past time for another global conflict, a conflict that will reaffirm the status quo and rid the world of a lot of the bad blood that has overflown its veins.

I'm pretty happy here. A planet without humanity is pretty worthless. I'll settle for a culling,

Maybe thats what war is good for

I guess it is just insane to me that humans believe slaughtering each other to settle their differences is okay. Shouldn't humanity aspire to rise above the level of animalistic behavior you see in nature amongst creatures with lower levels of consciousness? I think the majority of humanity are a waste of oxygen. Chasing around after material possessions in an endless game of competitive consumerism? Why don't more humans realize how fricking insane that really is?

Reminds me of this..

quote:

When asked what surprised him about humanity the most, the Dalai Lama replied:

“Man. Because he sacrifices his health in order to make money. Then he sacrifices money to recuperate his health. And then he is so anxious about the future that he does not enjoy the present; the result being that he does not live in the present or the future; he lives as if he is never going to die, and then dies having never really lived.”

But don't judge the whole of humanity by the few representatives who hold power and make stupid decisions.
