If he starts, is Portugal's back line less phsyical and will Aron's speed and tech ability be more useful?

For the few (and I mean very few) touches aron had, he looked like the smaller slower athlete last night.

Also, Bruno Alves had a shocker vs Germany.

Probably - Ghana is more athletic than Portugal.

There should be more space to operate and we should also see better service from the midfield.

We need to see more out of Johannsson against Portugal for sure. That said, that might require a change in formation, or at least better service from the midfield.

Billy Mays, your sig is awesome.

yeah, i think aron's struggles were largely based on bradley and dempsey playing awful. he'll be better sunday, i think. i just hope klinsmann doesn't start wondo. that'd be a disaster.

I'll start by saying that I'm a big Johansson fan. He's a natural scorer and somebody that will be an excellent piece of US Soccer going forward. That said, I would not be surprised at all if JK goes with Wondolowksi to start against Portugal. He's got 6 days to prepare and I would expect that starting position battle to be pretty intense heading into the weekend. I would prefer AJ over Wondo even though he struggled last night, but won't be surprised to see him subbed in at some point in the 2nd half Sunday with Wondo starting.

I think it's hard to rate Johannsson after last night's match...we were turtled up in defense the entire game and made no effort at all to move the ball in to the attacking end of the field. He didn't even have a chance to have a bad game or show up at all because our guys couldn't do shite except pass the ball backward and then give it back to Ghana. Just my opinion of course. I hope that he'll get the start next game.

Ghana is big, fast, and physical. Germany was physically manhandling portugal. We should fair pretty well against them.

bradley looked lost, and couldnt effectively transition the shape moving forward. It was bad.

Dempsey couldnt breath through his nose. That had to be tough

I agree. The only player who I think we can really say played bad last night was Michael Bradley. He looked god awful in every facet of the game. I quit counting how many times he got crossed up by an attacker, lost possession on offense, or just flat out looked like he wasn't even trying his hardest. On Ghana's goal he got left in the dust and didn't even make a hard attempt to get back into the play. Granted it was the 80th minute, but still. For someone who is suppose to now be one of our team leaders, on top of one of our best players, Bradley REALLY disappointed last night.

Yeah not as athletic as Jozy. However, he looked very composed on the ball. That is a good quality in a target man.

He has also displayed his finishing prowess in the Dutch league, and has scored 2 goals in 9 games for the U.S. (pretty good ratio).

Clearly, the guy shows a lot of promise. This is an opportunity to develop another quality striker, that's the way I look at it.

I think on the few times that he received service, he did a very good job of finding open players in active runs. I think he will be better when we aren't bunkered in so much and are able to bring him help. He loves playing quick touches and movement, but that wasn't going to happen with 10 playing on the defensive side of the ball like yesterday.

Agree 100%. I thought he looked very good on the ball. Confident and composed.

The lack of scoring opportunities was not really his fault.

I'm not sure either Aron or Wondo start.
Jurgen may simply abandon a 2-striker system now that we got the 3 points vs Ghana and his main striker is down.

Plus Portugal will be missing 2 of their starting backs correct?

Pepe & maybe contraeo

Not sure if that favors AJ or Wondo starting

Interesting because typically Dempsey pushes back to the midfield in that situation leaving Jozy up top.

But you could potentially leave Dempsey playing target man and sub in another midfielder like Zusi or Mix.

I think maybe you mean Almeida? He's a striker.
