Noob question about the group we are in
Posted by CocomoLSU on 6/17/14 at 8:06 am00
Can someone please explain the points system to me? I saw people talking about "the three points" yesterday, and postgame chatter on TV kept mentioning "we got the three points" as well. WTF does that mean...as in what do you get points for?
Also, how do we advance out of the group of four (I think?) that we are in? For example, if we win every game 1-0, is that enough to move out of the group? (I assume it would be, but I honestly have no idea and am curious)
A simple breakdown of the "scoring" system and how that works is what I'm looking for.
Thanks.
And I don't like soccer much, but honestly had a good time watching that game (match?) at home by myself yesterday. Without knowing much about soccer, I knew that we weren't playing well, and I was nervous damn near the whole time.
ETA: Sorry if these are stupid questions. And I searched the last three+ pages of the board and didn't see anything, thus this thread.

win = 3 pts
tie = 1 pt
loss = 0 pts
Need to be top 2 point total at end of group.
If you are tied the tie breaker is goal differential. That's why portugal losing by 4 was good. If we tie them and they beat Ghana we will both have 4 points but hopefully we will have a better goal differential.
If we beat Portugal we will have 6 points and will be a lock for either 1st or 2nd in the group; both advance.

Win = 3 points
Tie = 1 point
Loss = 0 points
If two teams have the same amount of points, goal differential is the tie breaker.
The two teams with the most points advance out of the group.

Three points for a win, one for a tie/draw.
Winning is the most important thing. Goals only come into play for the tie breaker, the first one being goal differential (goals for minus goals against).

8 groups of 4. Top 2 advance out of each group. a win gets you 3 points, a tie gets you 1, loss gets you 0.
So right now Germany and the US both have 3 points. Portugal and Ghana have 0. Typically 5 points is a pretty safe bet to get through to the next round. 4 points means that you are hoping for your team having the tie breaker (goal differential). With Portugal getting destroyed by Germany our goal differential is pretty good right now.

When group play begins on June 12, all four teams will play each other in a round-robin format. The group's standings are determined by points - you earn three points for a win and one point for a draw - the soccer term for a tied game. The top two teams in each group move on to the tournament's second-round.

4 of the 8 groups in 2010 had a team advance with 4 points. Only two groups in 2006 had teams go through with 4 points.
I think that this year is pretty well balanced (like 2010), so 4 points might be enough.
Goal difference is a tiebreaker, as long as we get points we are good
A common soccer phraae is "get a result" meaning 1 or 3 points. If we beat portugal we just need to "get a result" against germany to either win the group or seal our place in the next round

We're currently 2nd in the group due to goal differential. If we can beat Portugal, we'll advance to the Knockout stage which is more setup as a tournament as opposed to the round robin we're playing now.
Single elimination thereafter. Beating Ghana was huge, but that should have been expected. What's bigger is that Germany hung 4 of Portugal, as someone touched on earlier.

Gotcha. That makes sense...for some reason, I thought your score had more to do with it, but that's only for tiebreaker purposes.
So if we do lose, we'd want to only lose by one and the score wouldn't matter...so like us losing 3-2 is the same as losing 1-0, right?

for the most part
i'm not 100% on the WC scoring, but i think goals scored does come into play (possibly after GD)
it's
1. points
2. GD
3. goals scored (i think)

Okay, so since we're only playing three games, two ties should be okay for us, yes? And not that I'm aiming low, but just wondering so that I can know when to be happy or pissed when watching the next game/match.
I assume Germany is the best team in our group? When do we play them...next Thursday?

So losing 4-3 is better than losing 3-2 or 1-0 or whatever.
ETA: thanks for the explanations, peeps.

Tie break is:
quote:
The ranking of each team in each group shall be determined as follows:
a) greatest number of points obtained in all the group matches;
b) goal difference in the group matches;
c) greatest number of goals scored in the group matches.
If two or more teams are equal on the basis of the above three criteria, their ranking will be determined as follows:
d) greatest number of points obtained in the group matches between the teams concerned;
e) goal difference resulting from the group matches between the teams concerned;
f) greater number of goals scored in all group matches between the teams concerned;
g) drawing of lots by the FIFA Organising Committee.

Correct. 2 draws would put us through.

Yes

Yes, assuming we are only tied with one other team.

i forgot about drawing lots
in 2006 or 2010 (i forget), there was a real threat of drawing lots to see who advanced outof one group
