Hi OBers

I have a 12yo lab with hip issues. Just trying to make him comfortable on his bad days and not kill his liver. He is still active inside the house, but nothing more than that.

Is GC the only logical solution given his age?

Thanks in advance.

Has he been or is he currently on any meds, NSAIDS or pain killers. Have you had any X-rays done to evaluate hips, knees, spine.

Nah, no meds or recent X-ray. Just figured it was typical old age hip issues. Thanks for the reply

I would have some basic bloodwork done to assess liver and kidney values. Always recommend X-rays to see where exactly the main issue is.

I would at minimum start him on NSAIDs like previcox, meloxicam, or rimadyl. I have plenty of patients who treat daily for years without major side effects on liver and kidneys.
Pain killers such as tramadol can help without causing excessive sedation and only major side effect can be some constipation.
There are a lot of other treatment options like omega 3 sups and diets. Adequan or chondroprotec injections which you can give yourself and work well. Laser therapy and even stem cells therapies are available and I have used with good success.
Weight loss is important and swimming is great exercise that puts little strain on joints.

No he graduated vet school at about the time I started undergrad at LSU. Looks like there are 2 LSU grads there. Both older than me. Looks like a nice clinic though.

Rimadyl(carprofen) did wonders for my golden. You will need to get blood work done and checked periodically to monitor liver function.

If that is what your vet prescribes I'd be happy to send you about 50 75mg tabs o have left over from him. His hips got so bad he couldn't stand up so he is waiting for me at rainbow bridge.

Good info. I have a 15 year old lab/chow. Has always been a outside dog. My daughter is a Vet and she has been treating him with previcox for years. Works great. Also started my lab that was hit by a car. She is having hip problems due to being ran over. It works wonders for her too!

As others have said rimadyl is probably the answer but make sure the liver can take it. Also put it in perspective the dog is 12 he is a senior citizen in the lab world and rimadyl will keep him active and comfortable, it probably wont kill him and even if it reduces liver function he probably wont live to 15+ so it will not be the rimadyl that kills him. Now if he was 5 you would probably want other options.

I know rimadyl did wonders for my lab in the last 3 yrs of his life, he hunted at 13, not thru delta mud but water was warm, entries/exits easy and birds were dead …. Damn who started cutting onions in here …….

Is the dog taking glucosamine now? Easy item to give with no real side effects.

Agreed. I did everything LSUVet said, plus glucosamine.

It seems to help my two old pups.
