Was Florida Blvd. ever decent? (Thread for Baton Rouge Old Timers)

I live in proximity to Florida Blvd and find myself on it from time to time. I go to the Planet Fitness quite a bit since it isn't far from my house and also the various Vietnamese restaurants.
Was this stretch of road ever a thriving area? I see buildings that have been shut down for years in various stages of decay. Most of the businesses in the area are small, privately owned and a bit...shady looking. The Planet Fitness doesn't really fit in based on the outside decor and I wonder who decided to build one there. It is never busy, unlike the one in Gonzales or on Siegen.
So for those who have lived in Baton Rouge forever, what was Florida Blvd like? Was it ever a decent area for stores and business? When did it take a turn and what caused it?

My father in law swears Florida used to be the "it" place in BR.

When I was little, it was really nice area. It's sad to see that whole area of town I grew up in gone to shite.

Airline Highway from Florida at the Cortana area to Plank used to be the most hopping part of BR.

Airline going towards downtown was the place in the 60's.
I grew up near Flannery/Florida in the 80's.
Everything in BR was located on Florida - Cortana Mall, Home Depot, waterslides, Goony Golf, Fun Fair Park, etc., etc..
It started a very quick decline in the late 80's.

Yes, it was a nice area until those apartments near Belaire High rotted it from the inside out.

Yes, it was the happening place, and rural out by Sherwood Forest.

My dad had a restaurant at 9836 Florida blvd from 83-99. He had a thriving business, and with cortana being the only mall open in BR he stayed busy with the traffic from the mall.
Broadmoor was once a thriving community as well. So to answer your question 20-30 years ago Florida blvd was a great place to be.

Before the interstates were built and changed the main routes of travel, roads like Florida (Hwy. 90) and Airline (Hwy. 61) were the centers of commerce. Florida was replaced by I-12 and Airline was replaced by I-10.

I remember going shopping in the Delmont Village off of Plank Road near Tony's with my grandmother back in the '80s.
In the '80s and early '90s, Florida Blvd wasn't like it is today.

Kind of like the north side of Lafayette. When I was a kid, the Northgate Mall was THE place to shop.

yep, yep. It all started from the apartments around Belaire High School.
Florida Blvd in the 80's looked just as prosperous as Siegen or Bluebonnet does today.
