Is it standard to pay 1/3 upfront for a fence?

Fence guy is saying he needs 1/3 of the cost now. He still has to put up the pickets and put in the gates. They have been extremely slow. Excuse after excuse. It's been a month since they first started. Is this upfront payment pretty standard?

that's what I'm thinking...I don't want to pay them and have it take another friggin month. It'd be different if they were moving right along.

If all the material is there, I wouldn't see why not.

So a month in with little to show for progress and this guy is showing up asking for cash? Sounds like shitty fence guy to me. I'm guessing there's no contract?

Pay him for what he did already and tell him you don't need him anymore. Get a couple buddies over, buy plenty of beer, and cook steaks for them. Shouldnt take more than a weekend.
Did right at 300' a couple of years ago with just me and my pops in 4 days, and one of those days was just setting the 4x4's.

My neighbor, who has never put a fence in his entire life, had his brother come help him fence in the back yard. I'd guess it's about 100-150 feet of fence at most. Took him 3-4 days
