AT&T unlimited data grandfathered in

Like some of you I was grandfathered in to the unlimited data plan with my iphone. If I was to switch to a galaxy, would I maintain this data or would that officially remove me from this prestigious club.
Love my iphone but looking for a change but only if I can keep my unlimited data.

Don't know why you would lose it. I don't know why the type of phone would matter.

I would get that guarantee in writing before switching. If the cell providers can screw you some way and make you pay more, they will.

I switched and they let me keep the unlimited data. I don't know about you but once I get over 5gb of data, my speeds definitely start to slow. I wonder if this is the same if I would be doing 10gb shared?

Every time I've upgraded or changed my plan I've expected AT&T to make a run at screwing with my unlimited plan and they never have.

If you're not changing your data plan at all,'I don't see why you would. I would just make it absolutely clear when you go there that you're willing to switch, but if it messes your plan you're gonna be pissed.

I switched to the N5 which isn't even an AT&T phone and still have it

Switched to the shared plan 2 months ago and no throttling. Hit 8.5GB this month with no issues.

Usually they ask but if they don't just tell them you want to keep your plan and check it after you leave the store.
On a side note, it might be worth it to you to switch. I recently dropped my grandfathered unlimited data plan because I was eating through my limited minutes too fast. I now have unlimited minutes and share 10 GB with my wife (which is plenty for us) and pay about $15 a month less.

No throttling on shared plans. They have no incentive to because they charge per GB when you go over.

Switching phones won't change your plan. There's no mystical tech requirements in putting a sim card in a new phone that necessitate revisions in your contract, in the same way you'd upgrade from iphone to iphone. However, AT&T representatives do make commission from certain things, and I wouldn't be surprised if they are incentivized for moving people over to new plans with data caps. As long as you read anything you sign carefully and make it clear you want to keep your existing plan 100% intact, there shouldn't be an issue. They go after the low-hanging fruit, people who didn't even know they were on the unlimited plan, have no idea how much data they use per month, and are sold on the price difference (in the plans themselves).
For the past several years, I've been doing phone upgrades at Radio Shack of all places. They love to pressure you to get cases, screen protectors, extended warranties, etc., but one thing they don't do is try to frick with your existing plan because they likely have nothing to gain from it.

From what I understand, you won't be able to subsidize your phone. You will have to buy it upfront to keep unlimited. If you want to get a new phone subsidized, they will require you to sign a new contract.

Not true. I retained my unlimited data plan with AT&T in 2010 and 2012 getting the newest iPhone at a subsidized price.

Yes you can change phones and keep unlimited data. But do not change plans.

A couple of years ago my son had gotten old enough to have a phone so I activated my previous iPhone for him to use.
I figured If AT&T was gonna go after my unlimited plan, this would be their chance. They didn't. They added his phone to my account, left my unlimited plan unaltered and only capped his data.

This is all a big help. I'm a huge skeptic when it comes to salespeople. I think they'll look to screw you any chance they get.

You won't be able to subsidize the phones with the new plans. They now throttle the unlimited plans when you reach 5 GB so they can try to aggravate you into switching to the new shitty plans.
If you have the new data share plans, you either have to buy the phone full price, pay a monthly service charge (think paying for the full price in installments) or bring a phone like the Nexus 5. The days of all phones being subsidized are over. Get ready to pay anywhere from $350 to $800 for top of the line phones. The bad thing is that all the companies are colluding.

They are essentially removing the builtin subsidy in the plan. It is much better for people who keep their phones forever. Previously, if you wanted to keep your phone past 2 years, you would be wasting money because you wouldn't be taking advantage of the builtin subsidy in the plan.
