Respond if I said 12. Respond if I said 8. Why does this matter?

because Im trying to establish if this is kid pitch or coach pitch. Is this USSSA? AA, AAA or majors? I'd like to have a little background so I can form an appropriate response.

doesnt matter to me, i did not ask the question

but to answer your cutting kids question. we had to do the same thing a few years ago. had tryouts, and had a meeting with the parents telling them some made it, some did not.

we had 20 kids tryout and cut it to 12. in my opinion some of the 12 should not have been on the team

Talk to them about it now. Don't put it off until next years. Tell them they'll have to invest heavily in their kids just for them to have a shot. Be sure you let them know that there are no promises but unless something changes they're gone.

A team from my town had this problem a few years ago. They had a few unrelated men come and judge tryouts. If they are really not as good as the others then they will get cut.

Or you could have these men know who you want to cut and just be there for show if you are scared for your kid

Pretty much this. Explain to them the situation next year. You don't want them assuming that they will automatically make the team.

Yes, USSSA. We will start the season as a new AA team and very likely be moved to AAA quickly. IT is a younger age group. No majors yet.

are you transitioning from coach pitch to kid pitch? (8 years old to 9 years old) I assume thats the reason for the tryouts and wiping the roster clean.

Those 8yr olds that hit coach pitch, will not hit kid pitch

Kids age and mature at different rates......some of the kids u are writing off now may hit growth or maturity spurts

If u are writing them off already maybe you shouldn't be coaching

I'm not sure which age group you are referring to, but a lot may depend on the Dads. Some Dads see the difference and may be working their kids extra over the next year and make great improvements.

Plus there is a growth thing that can happen. My first year in Little League was an absolute disaster and I was an easy early pick for least likely to make the team next year. But things change and I was on an traveling all-star team in year 2.

Otherwise, yeah, the Dads will likely be pissed and will think of 1 kid that their kid should have beat out.

So true. My neighbor coached a team that moved from coaches pitch to kids pitch this past season. All the studs who were cranking the ball in the outfield last year were barely hitting the ball or just standing at the plate praying for a walk. All the other kids that someone would have cut were hitting the ball better (by the end of the season) than the studs from the previous year. Kids develop at a different pace.

I'd say keep the kids on the team after talking to the parents telling them you are there to win & will utilize whoever will help achieve that. If you are winning by a landslide let them play or be a DR. The kids are there to have fun & want to just play with each other. Don't take that away. JMO.

its a big change. There are kids that are just too scared and cannot swing the bat fast enough to hit kid pitch. It's takes longer for some to catch up to the speed of the game vs the speed in coach pitch.

That's probably what the OP is saying, and I agree with him. In that age group some kids should probably get a year or so under their belt playing rec and getting comfortable with another kid throwing pitches at them vs a dad that's serving up watermelons for them to hit, and the kid not having to worry about getting hit by a pitch.

No way to win. Been there and kept them and they played less than the others and played in spots when not detrimental to the team. Otherwise, you lose friends in favor of winning.
