I find it hilarious that so many basketball commentators will praise the Spurs for winning the right way will also rip teams like Philadelphia for tanking. No one cares whether a team that doesn't make the playoffs wins 35, 25 or 15 games. But if they get that lucky ping pong ball, it can change the franchise. Now credit to the Spurs and Pop for finding HOFers like Parker and Mano with later picks and guys like Leonard with a mid rounder but would a team that won 59 games in 96 and 56 in 98 have 5 O Brien trophies without out Duncan? Nope, but I'm sure they fell from 59 to 20 wins because some guys were hurt, not tanking

As a side note, shouldn't Duncan going to San Antonio and the Spurs winning 5 titles, trailing only Boston, the Lakers and Chicago silence the conspiracy kooks?

Totally agree. The Spurs are a great organization, but it's laughable that they play the whole home grown card.

They tanked. Period.

The current Rockets never drafted higher than 16. I'm proud of that.

not really, I hate the Spurs just as much today as i did in 1995 when we beat them

I've long advocated if my team isn't winning to get a better draft pick. The Spurs executed that strategy to perfection so my hats off to them, but I find it enormously hypocritically for so many commentators to rip teams like Philly or Orlando or whoever for "tanking" while praising the Spurs. San Antonio could not attract free agents the way LA, Boston, Miami etc can, so they should be the model for smaller markets teams. Tanking doesn't always work, but if you are a small market team, the Spurs should be your model and that means getting the #1 pick if you can.

right, because SA tanked in the 80s and got Robinson

Chances are Philly won't build a title team, let alone an dynasty with a high pick this year, but with Noel and who ever they do get they have a better shot than they would if they tried to win more and wound up with 30-35 wins, just missed the playoffs and a mid round pick.

But those teams didn't have a HOF already.

MEM/IND/OKC/POR are small markets and didn't really tank. They've had good success as well.

Spurs are also very smart about finding talent late and that helps tremendously.
