Changing flights through Delta
Posted on 6/15/14 at 7:51 pm

Abbreviated version:
My flight leaves for my destination at 6:15 pm Wednesday. I'll arrive at 10:00 local time.
I picked the 6:15 departure because I was going to be tied up until about 2:00. I'm now free all day.
Any way to change to an earlier flight without paying the $700 I'm seeing online?

Golfer can help you out if he's not too busy trolling the soccer board.

That actually crossed my mind as I was typing the OP

some airlines will let you reschedule for free if you have a certain tier of frequent flier miles...not sure of the particulars, though...

Definitely not in this category. I fly maybe once every 2-3 months and usually I'm booked through work. This is personal.

Call Delta and ask them about their same day standby policy.
They used to let passengers standby without a change fee as long as it was for an earlier flight & same day departure.

I think the change fee is around $150-200. Call them.

This is what I'm thinking but I would hate to drive from Bossier to Monroe and be on standby for the 6:00am flight and not be taken. Then I would be stuck in Monroe for 12 hours

There's no change fee if you do it within a certain timeframe, depending on the fare class. I think if you have a Y class ticket it's 24 hours, some others are 48 and 72. If you call them now I don't think you'll have a problem.
If they do charge you a change fee, call back and speak to a customer service rep and see if they'll refund it. Delta is pretty good about taking care of people.

well, if you are gonna be stuck in bossier for 12 hours anyway, it would seem to be worth the risk...
also, I would guess that there will be other flights during the day that you could also try to get on...

You can see how many unsold seats are available on flights using Delta.com.

There is a $50 same day change fee on Delta now. Used to be free but $50 is still a lot cheaper than making the change a day or more in advance. I paid the $50 less than a month ago so I do know this by recent experience.

Call delta at 6:15pm on Tuesday. Tell them you want to do a same day confirmed. It'll be $50 as long as your orgin/destination and date stay the same.
They only let you do SDC now if there's still tickets being sold in the fare class you purchased. Otherwise you can call three hours before your desired departure time and do a same day stand by which will cost you $50 but only if you take the new trip.

Not entirely true. For oversold flights they don't give people seats until they board.
Get to the airport early and if they can get you out on an earlier flight they will

And the seat map isn't indicative of how many seats are actually available. Sometimes DL is blocking seats for some reason or another and it'll show 0 available on DL.com but there's 25 still available for purchase in positive space.
Then, you'll see a seat map with 12 open seats and they are oversold by 5.

If a flight is oversold there will be no unsold seats shown for the flight on Delta.com. All seats will be shown as unavailable.
He can view the seats available the night before and if it's showing numerous unsold seats he can be pretty confident he can clear the standby passenger list.

That is 100% false.
ETA: For instance, DL 5518 for tomorrow morning is oversold in coach (no Y availability) but shows two available seats in row 12.
