"Is your home state filled with geniuses or boneheads? A new study has set out to discover just that, according to your borderline illiterate posts on Twitter. Quirky real estate company, Movoto, analyzed more than 500,000 tweets from across the country to determine the average grade reading level of each state. The results are laughably pathetic, with the entire United States scoring just below a 5th grade reading level."

Smartest and Dumbest States

And we throw rocks at people who want to re-vamp the educational system. Go figure.

Considering 99% of Twitter can't be read or understood by someone with half a brain...

I don't use twitter, but isn't the point to convey your message in as few characters as possible? That would lead to the dropping of tenses and possessives would it not?

The survey implies it used the same criteria for all 50 states - whatever that might be.

I wonder how words that we only use in Southern Louisiana, like "geaux", influenced our "average grade reading level"

It's really not surprising since Louisiana test scores are often the lowest in the country right along with Mississippi...

Using Twitter as a source to determine reading level?

Is it just me or are researchers getting more and more idiotic?

Now, I'm not claiming that LA isn't the dumbest state, it probably is, but whoever came up with the idea for this research is likely on the lower edge of the IQ scale.

The equivalent of the 78th percentile. Don't know if I'd be too proud of that.

Upon further review, LA is the 12th rung on the ladder, making it come in at the 24th Percentile. Yes - I'm from Louisiana - we get Mulligans down here. I may be old, but I'm slow.

Going to Twitter for signs of intelligence would be like gauging the effectiveness of abstinence-only programs by polling a whorehouse
