RAMAH — State Police Saturday arrested the driver of an SUV that flipped over a guardrail on the elevated part of Interstate 10 and fell into the Atchafalaya Basin, killing a woman passenger.

State Police booked Louis Rudd, 24, Largo, Florida, on a count of negligent homicide in the death of Mina Bell, 25, St. Petersburg, Florida, Trooper 1st Class Jared Sandifer said Saturday in a news release.

About 8:15 p.m. Friday, Rudd was heading west on I-10 near milepost 132 in Ramah. The Durango veered left and crashed into a south concrete guardrail, the release says.Rudd overcorrected, which caused the SUV to roll onto its side, strike the north concrete guardrail and flip over the side of the bridge.

According to the story, Troopers suspect Rudd was speeding and are still investigating to see who was restrained, the release says.

He was booked into the Iberville Parish Jail on a count of negligent homicide, five counts negligent injury and a count of careless operation.

A tragedy, I just think for someone that nobody has said was impaired they were awful quick to fling charges.

Who cares if he was impaired or not?
He killed a person because he's an idiot driver.
There will always be charges in such cares.

I'm not familiar with what happened but do we know what caused him to swerve. And he was the driver of the vehicle where the occupant died? So it's safe to say he knows them well or is family. In an unintentional accident, what good does locking this guy up do?

Could've been an accident or the kids messing around in the back, he went left a little bit, looked up, and swerved too much.

There's got to be another reason for the charges

He was charged with negligent homicide. It doesn't matter that he wasn't intoxicated or that he knew the individual(s) who died. All that matters is that his negligent operation of the vehicle caused the crash and the resulting deaths. If so, then he should be held accountable.

bullshite. a know a case where a guy driving down i10 had a blowout, hit the trees and his wife (passenger) died. LSP charged him with negligent homicide.

people die, life sucks, putting someone in jail over an ACCIDENT is bullshite. period. if he wasn't high, drunk then driving 70 and wrecking is hardly negligent. but hey. we have the most population in jail in the world.... great record to have!

Depends on the cause of the blowout. If the blowout was caused by the tire hitting a road hazard immediately prior to the crash, or if the tire was defective from the manufacturer, then I would say no. However, if the driver of the vehicle knew there was an issue with the tire, and yet continued to drive on it, putting himself as we'll as others at risk while he is driving on a ticking time bomb, then the answer is yes.

So what was the evidence to support the negligence charge? And what happened? I doubt they could prove their case unless he was just really negligent in driving his car with a known defective tire.
