Have an old dryer and I thought it went out yesterday. Tripped the dryer breaker and I reset it and then the main tripped. Bad element right?? I purchased a new dryer this morning. Installed it and it worked for about 3 minutes. Tripped the dryer breaker. Reset it. Tripped main. And ideas?? Wiring? Bad breaker??

Motor is going bad. Change that.

I have heard about some shitty Chinese breakers on the market though.

If the main tripped the second time I doubt its the breaker.

I would check recpt wiring first. Or you got two bad dryers.

Check the breaker where it plugs in the panel as well.

I don't mean this in a sarcastic "let me google that for you" kinda way. It's just the only help I can offer.

The dryer breaker could be suspect too.

The breaker tripped for a reason.

New dryers don't come with a cord. Did you re-use your old cord? Check that if you did.

With the breaker off, inspect the receptacle and replace like Kajungee suggested.

Try it again. If it doesn't work call an electrician to check the wiring for faults.

Don't increase the size of the breaker. That's dumb.

Is the house total electric? What is the breaker across from the dryer breaker handling? Sounds like it could be the buss bar.

Pulled cover off. Wiring looks good. Receptacle not damaged. No signs of an arc. Tried again. Dryer worked for one minute. Tripped main and dryer breaker.

Something is causing a high current to trip that main. With a new dryer (assuming it's wired correctly) I would assume a wiring, breaker or buss issue.

You should stop right now and call someone to have a look at it.

I think you have a wiring problem. Sounds as though the breaker is just doing it's job. What will you do with the extra dryer?

time to call an electrician...

If it was just the dryer breaker that was tripping, I would say that the breaker is just weak and recommend that you change it...

since the main is also tripping, there has to be something pretty major going on and I wouldn't risk it...

Dryer is already on a 20A breaker but, now it's throwing and tripping the main breaker.

Firstly 20A is nothing to fool with unless you know what you're doing and it sounds like a bad breaker throwing the main thus keeping your house from burning up.

FYI you only get so many throws with a breaker and if you keep tripping the main when it goes and it will $$$

Know this:

Call somebody ASAP and for Gods sake unplug the dryer.
