Actually, in the Quarter. I'm taking my cousin and her daughter (don't ask ) to New Orleans on Sunday. Neither have ever been and I can't really think of places to take them to experience the whole culinary experience.

I know about Mothers and a place down near the river, close to Jackson Brewery for red beans and rice but outside of that, I really don't know.

It doesn't have to be fancy, could be even chicken wings, fried whatever po boys, raw oysters (Acme? Drago's?), slices of pizza.

Any good suggestions, sort of a bar and grill type place? We'll have a car but would rather not drive around.

I was thinking taking them to Serio's for Muffalettas but outside of that, I'm lost.

Thanks for any suggestions.

Let's start by answering your raw oyster question. Skip ACME and head across the street to Felix's. Also, first timers to the Quarter should check out the Cafe du Monde experience.

Skip Morher's. How long will you be there? What meals...lunch, dinner?

best two places downtown for poorboys are johnnys and mothers. mothers gets lot of hate from locals but really good poorboys still.

skip serios for the muffulatta and go to central grocery. shorter hours but so much better. eat at central several times thats how good.

quite honestly, search yelp or urbanspoon for suggestions depending on price range. you'll prob get just as good info there.

the key is dont eat at a badly reviewed restaurant on those sites. all the other restaurants if they have 4 stars or above are going to be good, even if some people here dont like them. there's a nola dining clique on this site that seems like they approve of some restaurants and look down at others, even though if you gave them blind taste test they prob couldnt tell one way or the other. for instance the skip acme and go to felix. i always though acme was much better than felix. last time i went to felix they gave me quarter size oysters but they cost bout $10 a dozen. but for some reason locals think of acme as tourist and felix as the hidden local place. not sure why.

Sounds like you don't wanna spend a ton of money. Options are limited.

Check out Yo Mama's it's casual to the supreme with good food. If you can eat between 4-6 go to Domenica for happy hour. It's the best pizza in the city and the pies are half off.

People hate on Mother's. I've only been once and liked my crawfish omelette. I wouldn't wait in line though like you typically have to for a weekend.

Your usage of the word poor boys is so unique and cool.

Don't listen to running tiger. He's a confirmed troll.

Mothers is terrible.

Johnny's for Poboys. Cafe du Monde. Felix's.

I have to say I'm no FQ expert though. I spend virtually no time there.

Head down Decatur to Coop's. Inexpensive and you can get some very good jambalaya, gumbo, grilled fish, fried chicken, etc.

This. Coop's is probably my favorite casual quarter spot. You don't hear much about it, but it's great.

Mother's is not in the French Quarter (but it's easy to walk to from the FQ).

However, it's also lame. If you're willing to leave the FQ, in your shoes I might go to Cochon Butcher.

On the other hand, Butcher is quite original and inventive - deliciously so, but does not necessarily deliver dictionary-definition NOLA classics.

Maybe lunch at K-Paul's would work.

Skip Mother's.

It is an awful/pathetic tourist trap.

I worked downtown for 6 years before we moved offices and my favorite for po-boys was FredRick's on St.Charles- between Canal and Poydras, close to the Intercontinental hotel.

Napoleon house has a fantastic chicken sandwich (and of course other good local food), reasonable prices and a "hidden" courtyard that seems like something your family would enjoy.

It is also one of the oldest buildings in the quarter last I recall.
