Athletes with Shattered Confidence

As a neutral fan, is there anything more depressing to watch than an athlete that has lost all confidence in himself? Watching Iker Casillas today and Mario Chalmers the past couple games got me thinking about this. Rick Ankiel as a pitcher, Chuck Knoblauch, Roy Hibbert early in the playoffs and countless others also come to mind.
When an athlete loses confidence, is there a road back? Should coaches/managers let him play through it or is it best to leave him on the bench for a while so he doesn't kill the team? What dictates this decision? The peak of his past performances? His salary? The quality of the available alternatives?

The Yips. Chuckie Knoblauch was brutal to watch, even as an opposing fan.

Jared saltellamachia (sp) couldn't even throw the ball back to the pitcher

Once his teammates lose confidence in him its tough to stick with a guy. At that point you put the team first and go with an alternative.

Ian Baker Finch had a pretty solid collapse.

Jason Bay completely lost the ability to hit when he went to New York.

I remember when Steve Sax couldn't make the throw from second to first.

Those issues have nothing to do with confidence. It's a mental problem. The "yips".
It's not a confidence issue. It's their brain making them physically incapable of doing what they want to do... even something they've done a million times.
Like Charles Barkley with his golf swing. He's not doing it on purpose. His brain goes haywire right before he hits the ball.
Now, you can lose confidence in yourself because of it... but confidence is not the reason for the yips.

because they lose confidence and start overthinking things, mainly with a negative slant

You don't have to lose confidence to overthink things.
Some baseball players can throw perfectly fine anywhere they want except from one spot to another...
A player might be able to throw perfectly fine from second to third, but can't throw the ball from third to second.

when you think negatively, you do. confidence is the lack of negative thinking about yourself/performance

because the "brain rush" you described earlier occurs, basically due to a rush of negativity injecting itself into the brain
that's why they call it "getting in your head". once you start thinking about the specific variable you're having difficulty with, you lose confidence in that one area, and then once it's "in your head", it will recur every time that same set of behaviors is presented
confidence, as a mental state, is the lack of this doubt/worry, which prevents it from "getting in your head"
