Wife and I are heading to Playa del Carmen next week and will be renting a car in Cancun. Neither of us have been to Mexico so are not really sure what to expect. Is there anything we should be aware of before renting a car? Any particularly good agencies or ones to avoid?

Just get insurance and have your payoff money in your sock ready.

Take pictures all around it with the agent present BEFORE the rental. The less-reputable rental firms will attempt to ding you for physical damage to the unit upon return.

Do not rent a car in Mexico. Worst experience of my life. Got shaken down by the Policia not once but twice. DO NOT DO IT!

I've been to that area 6 times. There is no way I would rent a car. Just take taxis.

We were thinking of trying to cruise around and check out some of the ruins and such around Playa del Carmen. We don't want to be stuck at the resort all day.

I guess I should check to see if the resort offers reasonable transportation.

Take pictures of it before you drive off. Let them know you took pictures. They tried to stick us with charge for a dent, but we had pictures to back it up.

We had booked Hertz, but when we got there it was literally going to be an 8 hour wait to get a car. We walked next door to Avis and got one right away.

Get ready for guns in your face along the highway to Playa. There are huts you have to slow down for with military personnel. We were never stopped, but it is somewhat intimidating.

Just get a car service. Do you really plan to drive that much?

Don't make jokes to the car rental company about being a "drug mule" or "recreational pot user." Apparently, humor does not translate well.

I honestly have not thought much about it. It just seemed like a nice option to have if we wanted to go check a place out without having to get crammed in with a bunch of other folks.

We used these people: Entertainment Plus / USA Transfers.

$80 roundtrip from Airport --> Playa Paraiso (30min. North of Playa del Carmen) ---> Back to Airport. Car to the hotel was a private van. Car to the airport was a suburban. I tipped $10 each way. It was very easy. Look them up on TripAdvisor. Great reviews.

It's a 3rd world country plagued by corrupt police and violence. Cancun is probably ok, but just ok in the tourist areas. Wouldn't drive around blind. It's a dump beyond the tourist areas anyway.

To me, that's the point of a resort. You can avoid the shithole country you're in

You won't. Most you may do is go to Puerto Aventura, Akumal, or Tulum. I'll suggest an excursion: Riviera Adventours. We snorkeled with sea turtles, snorkeled an underground river cave, ate lunch at Oscar & Lalo's (ask to play with the monkey LaLa), zip lined over a crystal clear lagoon, and jumped off another cliff into a crystal clear lagoon. It was awesome. They only packed six of us into a 10 person van.
