Iraq is breaking up. The Kurds have taken the northern oil city of Kirkuk that they have long claimed as their capital. Sunni fundamentalist fighters vow to capture Baghdad and the Shia holy cities further south.

Government rule over the Sunni Arab heartlands of north and central Iraq is evaporating as its 900,000-strong army disintegrates. Government aircraft have fired missiles at insurgent targets in Mosul, captured by Isis on Monday, but the Iraqi army has otherwise shown no sign of launching a counter-attack.

The nine-year Shia dominance over Iraq, established after the US, Britain and other allies overthrew Saddam Hussein, may be coming to an end. The Shia may continue to hold the capital and the Shia-majority provinces further south, but they will have great difficulty in re-establishing their authority over Sunni provinces from which their army has fled.

So far, Obama's second term has been mirror opposite of his first term. His first four years were makred by a shitty economy, but a pretty good foreign policy. Second term the economy has been very healthy and strong and recovering, but foreign policy/scandals abroad are happening on a regular basis.

I have a hard time laying this at the feet of Obama. Are we supposed to stay in Iraq for the next 30 years?

It's been pretty damn obvious from the start that Iraq would evrntually break up into 3 separate countries with each dominated by the three sects of Islam. This should have been done from the beginning but the word negotiation has no translation there. It's now being done at the point of a gun.

You consider the economy healthy and strong? We have massive unemployment and work force is at it's lowest participation since Carter. We just negative GDP growth. The economy sucks it's hanging on by a thread and propped up my massive quantitative easing

How long were we in Japan, and Europe after World War II. I'd say longer than 30 years more like 70 years, and they are stable.

HUH?

We're in the middle of the WORST recovery in history.

Obama's ONLY "success" is getting enough people to just stop looking for work so that his "unemployment numbers" don't look as bad as they really are.

Japan and Germany were homogeneous states. Unlike Iraq which was arbitrarily made into a country after WWI with several different religious sects and tribes that didn't like each other lumped all together. It was held in place by tyrannical dictators until 2003.

I'm def not up on all of the ins/outs over there... But is it almost guaranteed that Iraq will break into multiple countries?

When did these groups (ISIS/ISIL, et al) formally surrender to U.S. forces?

HHTM - I love you, but this administration is Carteresque in scope, made worse by being given a second term.

Ultimately, he is going to make W. look good, in hindsight, and I didn't think that was possible, even in theory.

Yep, that .1% growth in the first quarter really has me excited.
