At my work we have a parish boat with an old 2-stroke Evinrude. The motor starts fine (must choke), and once you get it running, runs fine wide open. However, in order to put the motor in gear, you have to hold the choke and bump the throttle all the way up pretty much. Ove you get it going it's fine. It is impossible however, to put the motor in gear without holding the choke, or to just move slowly. If you go too slow the motor kills and you must go through this process all over.

I am not a boat expert, but can anyone give me advice on how to fix? Or tell me what they think the problem is? Thanks.

Sounds like the idle speed needs to be increased or that your carb is dirty. Do you have a pic of the motor? I'm trying to remember how to adjust the idle speed..... If you could post a pic I could walk you through it....

It just needs a tune up when it starts acting "cold" like that... like Texastiger said, adjust the idle up a little and maybe she won't kill switching gears.

Oh, and obligatory...

Dont adjust carb

Slow speed jet is clogge some.

Pull drain plugs on carbs, unhook hose from tank fitting, pump bulb till no gas comes frim drain plugs.
Install drain plugs. put tank end of hose in seafoam can.
Pump till bulb tight.
Let sit overnight. drain carb, hook up fuel line pump bulb.

It is the gas fitting that are sucking air. Those old evinrude fitting has rubber orings that break down over time.
