Businesses that don't take AMEX - do you support them?

?

Not usually. It's not a deal breaker if I really like what they are selling. But, if I can get almost the same thing at a place that takes amex, I'll go there.

I don't have an Amex card, so sure!

Sure. I'd probably think twice about taking AMEX too if I were a small business owner. They charge, by far, the highest fees. They also do shite like make you pay extra if you have to enter the card manually (security risk). They're brutal.
ETA: I do get very annoyed at restaurants that don't take AMEX and/or businesses whose items cost more than, say, $50.

Ya I have reward cards from all issuers so I'll use one of them regardless

Hell no, they're outrageous, and their service has steadily gone down over the last twenty years. I've a friend in So. FL that owns a couple of electronics stores. The avg. purchase in his stores is $3200. He doesn't take AMEX and does OK.

Seems to me that small businesses with higher price points per order are reluctant to take AMEX

Yeah. I don't blame them.

We stopped taking Amex and discover, they were outrageous with fees, have seen no one upset about it, I think most people that use those 2 cards realize not everyone takes them and has a backup card

I have an amex, visa and MC so i dont care
Posted on 6/12/14 at 1:42 pm to Golfer
Don't really care. That's their prerogative. I have a Visa I'll just use instead.
I've certainly never been about to buy something and been like "wow you don't take AMEX? I'm outta here."
That's a little ridiculous.

Considering there are thousands of places that don't take AMEX, yes.

I'm a tiny business and I take AMEX and Discover and Diner's Club.
I pay 2.79% for them, as opposed to 2.33% with the big two. But I don't care, the small amount never bothers me and I actually get the money faster then if you write a check.

they ALL do that.
Most of my inputting is actually over the phone, many of my customers I may never meet. As long as I have their zip and CCV code I never have a problem.
I pay 3.41% when I enter an Amex in manually, and it isn't often with those as most use the big two.
I do pass the cost on to the consumer with a 3% phone processing fee to offset the cost. But most don't complain when it's that convenient.
If it's a new customer I may run them through the PayPal POS system as it's more secure in my opinion. But only one charge back so far, and I'm still fighting it.
eta my average charge is between $130-200 so that is why I don't mind. If I had $3000 charges all the time, I would revise the policy for sure.

I very rarely find someone who doesn't take AMEX, and usually it is like a mom and pop type place, like a dry cleaner or other small business.
