AC Experts: Does this sound right?

I don't know anything about AC units. I grew up in a cold climate and never lived in a free standing home with AC until 3 years ago.
4 years old and as of last weekend was blowing at about 85 when it was 90 outside. It would get back into the 70s by morning.
Anyway, had it looked at and it's leaking Freon and they say the evaporator coil needs to be replaced.
The parts are under warranty but "labor and materials" are not. To replace this thing, it cost nearly $500 for labor and materials. They say the cost of part is between $800-$1000. Simple google searches tell me that's ridiculous, but I'm not really certain.
Does this sound right? Thanks

If they replace your unit for $500 you need to take that. Or send them to my house. I will take that.

You gettin' fricked.

Did an evaporator coil on my old house and it was 1300 for parts and labor. So yeah sounds about right

The warranty won't cover replacing the coolant. $500 to replace the coil sounds cheap to me.

They're not replacing the unit, just he evaporation coil. It's under warranty with this one place.
I'm curious if would be cheaper do everything with another company. $500 for labor and "materials" (which they could not tell me what that means) seems very high. The "$1000" coil is under warranty. I have no baseline for this stuff, so I'm hoping for some perspective. Thanks

where are you located?

What type of unit?

So coolant would be included in "materials?"
They filled it with 4 lbs @25/per lb already this week.
This whole thing reeks of BS to me, but I'm just not sure. Thanks

Not BS - sounds like a pretty good price to me.

What type of unit?
It's a Lennox, not sure model. It's a 2009 model, looks like this
I'm in Baton Rouge

they are mostly all a bunch of crooks, but in June in South LA, you dont have a lot of options and they know it....Had an issue a few years ago with a heat pump not cooling, called a company I have used for years, they tell me it is either the T Stat or the reversing valve, and to hope it was the T stat bc the valve was a very expensive part and would cost $1500 or so, any way it turned out to be the valve and I mentioned that the part should be covered under warranty, so after checking it was and the part was free....they then come back with the part was the cheap part it is the labor that is expensive for that

Sounds like a good deal. Are they including the new freon in that price? depending on your unit it could take up to $300-500 for the freon

I had a 5 ton Goodman under warranty. Was going to be $1800 for that exact parts & labor because an enormous amount of freon was needed due to some double coil setup and R22.
For a couple $100 more, I just bought a new one and upgraded to 410a freon system.
$500 sounds cheap.

500 doesn't sound too off to me
I'm going through the same thing right now

No you're not getting ripped off - quite the contrary. Everyone I know that has gotten the evap changed has been $1500+.

Thanks for the advice. Like I said, I just don't have much perspective on AC units.
Spent $230 Monday to have it looked at and filled with Freon then another $500 for the situation above (labor and materials) since the part is under warranty.
Appreciate it again

That's a good deal. Sounds a little too good. They usually charge more for that. Is it a reputable dealer?

That price is damn good. You say it's under warranty? You could get a copy of it and see exactly what is under warranty; however, at that price I would ask them when they could do the work and give my approval. Make certain you get warranty info on new component and save the job receipt. The price sounds like a friend type deal.

Yes. Had a coil replaced years ago. It was around $900 total.
