I used an external hard drive as a backup for about 2 years and now it's crapped out. It makes a little noise and lights up but doesn't show when connected. Suggestions on how to get the data from the bad drive?

try moving it to another enclosure in case the problem is with the controller or power supply.

if that fails, you can either send it off to be recovered for $1000 or whack it on the desk a few times (no lie) and maybe get it going.

gotta love moving parts

One of my teachers spoke highly of this...I've still not had a chance to try it out.

Get any of the file recovery programs. Mine crapped out and I was able to recovery just about everything - and it was my work computer too

It took about 2 days to finish everything (from finding the program, to running the program, to extracting the old data, to transferring the data back). EaseUS partition is one and Wonder_____ (forgot the name). Also, I'm pretty sure you're more concerned about taking the data off the drive than the drive itself.

The issue is getting it to spin again..If it is truly dead, no program short of forensics will get it back
