Did I pick the right business school? (Masters)
Posted by Dawgnational on 6/11/14 at 1:04 pm00
Basically I did my undergrad at UGA and passed the CPA exam. In addition to the 30 hours to meet the CPA requirement I really want to work in the Maryland/ DC/Virginia area or some place in the Mid-Atlantic. I was fortunate enough to get accepted into The University of Maryland: College Park (thank god). The school of business seems to be VERY good. However the accounting program there isn't too strong. I still paid the deposit. I think I made the right decision. The alumni base is very strong and I would have an excellent opportunity to network not to mention getting the extra 30 hours to meet the CPA requirement. I think if I have one school from the south (UGA) and one school from the north /mid-Atlantic (Maryland) on my resume I would have a networking capabilities and alumni base. I am still wandering if I should of applied to other schools like College of Williams and Mary which has a good accounting program but I am very happy with my current decision. What do you guys think?

My fiancee went to William and Mary. Many many alum in the DC area. I assume Maryland is similar. You made a good decision by picking a school in the area you want to work in, after that you may be splitting hairs.

Don't know about the W&M program, I'm sure it's good, but you can't go wrong with UMD in the DC area.
I'm sure W&M has plenty of connections too, but UMD is way more urban and plugged in that area.

Let me help you out here with some real world advice. Unless you are getting preferred placement at a prestigious company, it really doesn't matter where you get your MBA.
It's all about you and your aptitude. I know one guy right now with a shitty UNO MBA making about 300K a year.

Sounds like you made a good decision
I will likely end up at UGA for graduate school.
My UT flag will stay in my trunk for two years.

My car got keyed in Athens during my first 2 weeks. Added a UGA law sticker and I was good from that point.

Thank you all!! :)
Univ of Maryland is very centrally located. It is only 30 minutes from DC. According to the website there are 30,000 alumni’s in the DC area. Univ of Maryland is also one of biggest school in the Mid-Atlantic (so a large alumni base).
I am very fortunate to be accepted and I plan to work hard and prove it!
Thanks again everyone

Good advice Cajun Revolution. A big part of the real world is the persons aptitude, people skills, and leadership.
