Any of you have suggestions?

I'm looking into Gatlinburgh or Pigeon Forge. Just the wife and I heading out. 1 bedroom, we want it to be near a creek or waterway. Balcony with a view.

Any good experiences that it should look into?

Thanks,

Look around the Townsend area.

You're welcome

Scenic, beautiful views, tons of creeks/rivers to float on. Without 95% of the tourists

Aren't the tourist bad on the NC side too?

. yes and no, nothing is as bad as Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge.

FWIW, I was talking about highlands, nanahatla, Cashiers etc..

Townsend. Went there in November just to get away. Real nice and quiet.

Cherokee, NC is a dump. There's lots of nice areas in NC if you get farther away from the GSMNP.

Nantahala National Forest is a great recommendation.

Beautiful, pristine wilderness, and it's off the beaten trail. More time than not, it's more of a local spot (for TN,NC residents) compared to the tourists traps. Great abundance of wild life, like every where in East TN and Western NC. Definitely somewhere worth keeping in mind

If you want to stay IN "downtown" Gatlinburg, our favorite is the suites at Best Western Twin Islands.
Great location in the middle of town, but still quiet.
Several creeks converge on the hotel grounds.

check out Helen GA as well. Similar little mountain area but not nearly as over the top as Gatlinburg. May be a little closer for you also check out blue ridge GA

I went for the Bama/Tenn game in 2012 and stayed at a cabin called "Comfy and Cozy." About 15 minutes from Gatlinburg in the mountains. Only one cabin within 300 yards of you.

Comfy and Cozy

We slept 7 in there with plenty of room to spare. Actually skipped on going to the game because the cabin had a 62 inch TV in the basement. Also, they have a pet raccoon named Rocky who interacts well with people. He'll come up and take food from you.

Go to Gatlinburg.com, they have every rental company listed on there with links to their sites. You can search for exactly what type of place you want to stay in, and they have plenty of pictures of all the rental properties.

My wife's family is from Atlanta and we go there frequently. We get a cabin way up the mountain for a week.

You'll want to stay closer to town than someone who's never been. See the sights, do hiking trails, etc.

Also, don't spend money on the overpriced attractions in downtown Gatlinburg. You can drop $300 on a family in a hurry.

This. Loved Townsend, and better yet, it wasn't far from Cade's cove.

Rent a place off of www.vrbo.com

That's what I did. Couldn't believe how easy and hassle-free it was.
