universal remote control
Posted by achamb7 on 6/9/14 at 8:12 pm00
Looking for a universal remote control for my home theater system. Anyone have recommendations? Looking to operate 3D TV, 3D blu-ray player (or PS3 if it will), dish network receiver, home theater receiver.

I use a harmony 650. No complaints

Is it learning? Does it perform all of the functions of your other remotes?

Harmony remotes are pos.
I've had the cheapest harmony for a couple years now and it works great. Sound bar, TV, and cable box. It was like the cheapest one, 80 bucks or so. I've beat the hell out of that thing too. My parents had like a $200 one and it broke. It can even control your ps3 with a separately sold adapter.
If it doesn't have some weird button on it that you need that was on a previous remote, you can program any thing from your old remote to the harmony on any button you want.

+1 on the Harmony remotes. I have the 900, which is the RF remote. Works great

I have a logitech combo touch screen and raised buttons. Paid $125 on Amazon. It is awesome. Plug it into your PC and get a login to the logitech website. To setup new devices simply put in the model number of the said device. Thats it.
You can also decide which device will be the main volume control. This is really nice in home theater setups.
Logitech Touch. Great remote.

First off harmony makes programmable remotes not universal. Universal remotes are those shite things you buy for $7 at Walgreen's.
Second you can easily pick up a $30 harmony all over the place from refurb sites and give it a spin.
Third anyone that says harmony is shite has no clue how to set them up properly.
I prefer the cheap ones myself because I have kids and they tend to drop it on the hardwood alot.
The other advantage to getting s cheap lcd version is the battery lasts for 6+ months when you're not powering a gigantic led screen but you still get the same features.. Except rf.

cant imagine anyone hating a harmony. the database is so extensive i haven't found a device yet that wasnt covered.
it takes all of 5 minutes to create a macro for anything more complicated than turning shite on.
i have a drawer full of remotes in the back room of the house that i laugh when i open because i can't imagine trying to use and keep track of all of them.
your config is stored in the cloud so if the remote dies, just buy another & connect to logitech online and everything gets downloaded to your new remote.
it handles all my shite; chromecast, wdtv, xbox, DISH and AVR FLAWLESSLY.
bonus that you can do things like have it automatically MUTE or set the volume low when its turning everything on.
how can anyone bitch about a harmony?

I have a 750 I think. It has a smaller LCD and rechargeable batteries. It works well, but it doesn't handle my LG minisystem (Cheap blu-ray 5.1 surround all in one) the best.
If you turn it off while any input other than optical (optical from cable box to system for audio) is selected they next time you turn it on it has trouble finding which input to select. I worked for 2 days with 2 different harmony support techs on the phone and they couldn't figure it out, so I chalked it up to LG's layout and now make sure I change the input before I turn it off.

quote:I have replaced three Harmony remotes in five years. That's why we use the IR Smart Remote. Our phones have IR so for $7 I programmed them just as easily, if not more so, than the Harmony remotes.

In addition, I have macros that run each room's systems in the house, including XBOX One and my multi-zone sound system. I even have it programmed so that when I'm watching something, if my phone rings, it turns down the sound, pauses live TV, then I answer the phone. When I'm done with my call, it pauses 10 seconds to give me time to end the call, and set my phone down. Then it starts to play and sound ramps back up to the previous level over a five second interval so I don't get blasted as soon as it starts playing.
I still have a cheap Harmony in each room for when the in-laws are over, and for my 7 year old.
