The infamous man who made these comments:

quote:

During his nearly six-minute tirade, Matthew Stevens referred to Cajuns fans–as well as the general population of Lafayette–as being unintelligible and hard to understand, mentioning several times that “I can’t understand these people when they talk. I can pick out words and sentences, and I think I can figure it out. It goes over my head.” Stevens also suggested Lafayette “is the worst place in America.” Read More: Mississippi State Bulldogs Sports Radio Calls Lafayette Trip 'Worst Experience Ever' |

Unfortunately, I was terminated from The Commercial Dispatch. I accept this as a consequence for my comments & I’ll always be remorseful.

quote:

I want to thank The Dispatch for employing me as a sports writer. It was truly my pleasure. Also thank you to the readers for their loyalty.

quote:

I want to say again I’m truly sorry to everybody I hurt w/ my comments. I regret making that mistake but I must take full responsibility.

He'll be picked up quickly. He does a good job. He got carried away and made some comments in poor taste but I don't think he did near enough to lose his job.

losing his job over those comments is quite lame. I mean they were ignorant, but still don't think he deserved to get the ax for anything said.

probably more of a negative reflection on his employer situation. On the State board, it sounds like it was more of a strike 3 type of thing.

Matt Stevens was a guest on AFR Friday elaborating on his trip. He stated that he spent his time in the northern part of Lafayette. Needless to say, that is considered the hood to most people in the area. So don't be surprised if someone perceived his comments as racist.

"Mr. Stevens' superiors at the Dispatch (Mr. Boudreaux and Ms. Thibodeaux) could not be reached for comment."

I doubt he got fired for this one incident.

If you are a good employee you don't get fired for pissing off one small city's population.

He probably sucked already.

Clay Travis would be promoted to lead anchor at FS1 over comments like this.

That was a tacky article, but he didn't deserve to lose his job.

The only thing I can hope is that he had done something previously and this just sent him over.

If it was just about the comments he made last Monday...that's dumb.

They paraded him out like a bitch to apologize on the air, and then fired him anyway? That's b.s. even if his comments were in poor taste.

This happens, literally, multiple times a week all over the country.

Think about that next time any of you support banning someone for telling a joke or making a comment that "crosses the line".
