Now, to clarify, this is NOT a bash on the Beatles, so to you Beatles fans out there, this thread is not intended to disparage the Beatles in any way. No one can deny the Beatles' influence and the talent they possessed. However, as a general question, do any of y'all believe the Beatles are overrated in how they are perceived as "the greatest band ever" and the "band that shaped rock n'roll"? No one can deny that the Beatles were a great band, but the best ever? Is it safe to say that without them, music would have been drastically different? What do ya'll think?

I respect them, but I've never really enjoyed them.

They were absolutely more popular than any other band at any other time in history. But I think the Rolling Stones are arguably the best band ever imo

CaptainPanic, without the British rock bands, rock n' roll as we know it would have never existed. The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Cream, The Who, Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, the list goes on and on... but you're right, the Stones definitely have an argument for best ever!

ETA: To answer the original question, no, the Beatles are not overrated. Just look at their output from 1963-70. Hit after hit after hit. Some classic albums. Weird psychedelic stuff. Raga and rock and jazz and blues etc.

No, but I'm a pretty big beatles fan.

George Martin was/is seriously underrated. The real brains behind the operation.

Sure, and the same can be said for Zeppelin and Pink Floyd, and the Who at their peak, and the Allmans, etc.

But none had the impact and influence of the Beatles. And looking at their body of work, no, they are not overrated. But they really are not a band I listen to either.

Them plus Grateful Dead could be considered up there as well. They created the storm of jam bands which run the festival circuit. Say what you will about festivals but they are a huge deal. Especially for the towns they are located in

Yes, they're overrated. Most of their music has no soul and is just plain boring. Other than George Harrison, I don't think any of them were very good songwriters.

Obviously I know my opinion is the minority opinion, and I respect the influence they had on artists after them, but their music just didn't speak to me. And at the end of the day, that's what music is about to me.

The Beatles showed the way. It is impossible to over rate them.

I'm 33. The only person that I know personally who likes the Beatles -- like actively listens to them -- is one of my oldest brother's friends. So he's probably 42.

And with respect to the above, keep in mind that:
a) I'm by no means reclusive. I'm more like the antithesis of a recluse. So, without sounding like a dick, I've met lots and lots of people throughout my 33 year journey on Earth. And,
b) I love talking about music.

People don't like the beatles. The band never gets brought up. Nobody puts them on a playlist. You won't hear one their songs at a party. This conclusion is supported by what I believe to be a more than sufficient sample size.

Yes. Maybe because I'm only 26, but I don't get the love at all. To me they are just ok.

This pretty much settles it imo. I was at the bar the other night and I didn't hear one Beatles song the entire time I was there.

The Beatles are terrible

Phish did much more in that regard than the Allmans did.

I don't think age matters at all. I became hooked around 15 or so.
