Question for the OT Cyclists

So I'm trying to decide between two bikes. I just unloaded my 2009 Gary Fisher Triton single speed because I'm looking to get more into long distance riding.
I'm between a practically brand new 2009 Gary Fisher Presidio. This is a cyclocross bike, but I'm familiar with the geometry and am willing to slap some 700x28s on it and just make it a roadie. No pedals or computer with this bike and I have to pay $90 worth of shipping.
Other bikes is a practically brand 2011 Trek/GF Cronus Pro with speed play pedals and Trek computer (not sure which computer exactly) with free shipping.
When it's all said and done, the Cronus would cost roughly $100 more than the Presidio for the exact same setup.
Do I just spring for a already fully stocked carbon fiber frame Cronus with free shipping, pedals, and a computer?
TIA

Dammit. You sold your bike?! You should have sold it to me!!!!

Unless you've already done some riding like this, I would wait to buy the bigger purchase and go with the lighter one on the wallet.
Only when you see yourself pouring a lot more time and thought into this activity should you go for the higher-priced bike.

I think Ham is an experienced rider, if I recall correctly.

Carbon is worth it to me. My old road bike was aluminum and now riding carbon and its like night and day in terms of comfort.

yea, sold the road bike. It's a single speed and I'm pretty much maxed out at 20 miles on it. Great bike, but I need to move up in the world.

If this is your goal (long distance riding), then yes. No question.
You would only be upgrading by next year anyway.

Weight difference in the 2 bikes is 2 pounds 9 ounces. I've never ridden carbon, but seeing such a small weight difference made me think it's kind of irrelevant. Guess that's why I asked here.

I'm a fan of Specialized.

Yea, I'd like I get into longer distance riding. I want to train for a long ride (180 miles in 2 days) starting soon, which is the reason I've decided to make a move off of the SS now.

2 pounds is a fairly substantial difference, but weight is largely irrelevant unless your climbing. Aerodynamics matters much more. Where carbon is head and shoulders better is in the quality of the ride.

so which Bike MS ride are you doing?

Neither. Bike around the Bay for the Galveston bay foundation.

Interesting. I guess I never knew carbon frames made much a difference in terms of the ride. I've always just ridden steel.

this is why. a good steel bike is on par with most carbon..just a bit heavier.
i'd ride a good steel italian bike any day of the week over alot of the crap that passes for carbon these days

So if you were in this situation you would go with the steel presidio?

bikes are very subjetive. you need to ride both if possible. its not just the frame material; its also whether the geometry fits you; a pure racing bike is going to be uncomfortable for most people and your body style...longer legs, shorter legs, longer torso, etc. also have a bearing on this.
