The players unfurled a banner which said 'Las Malvinas Son Argentinas' (The Falklands are Argentine) before their match with Slovenia on Saturday night. The team has paraded similar banners before, but with the World Cup about to start the incident has put the gesture under the spotlight. FIFA, which does not allow political messages during matches, has confirmed to Sky Sports News it will review the incident which could lead to a punishment for Argentina.

Their President is going crazy and is trying to distract from that.

In a recent referendum on the Falklands on whether the islanders wanted to remain British, 1513 voted yes and just three voted no.

Haha I happened upon an article about the Falklands in the Dr.'s office last week and it's laughable Argentina tries to claim them.

I hope England and Argentina get matched up in the KO rounds.

I posted about this in one of the daily friendly threads. The funniest part was that immediately after holding this banner, Mascherano and the Slovenian captain ceremonially planted a tree for peace.

But yeah the Malvinas/Falklands are incredibly useless islands.

Argentina just trys to stur it up when they have problems to try and distract people from those problems.

Especially while under Tory rule and the citizens wanting to be part of the UK, if they try anything we will go in and frick their shite up again

No. They were hoping Thatcher just wouldn't care enough to risk British soldiers halfway around the world.

I remember the incident, didnt the brittish beat them back, with a Cruise Ship? It was one of the most embarrassing losses, of a war/conflict.

If i was the Argentinian people i would act like the event never happened.

It was more about domestic politics and the Argentine junta trying to protect itself through stirring up nationalism

I know that the British ships could fire longer a distance than the Argentine ones and would shell the Argentine ships out of range and couldn't be touched.

Except for that whole Exocet missile thing. The Argentines sunk the HMS Sheffield with an anti-shipping missile, but yea, the Brits did win pretty handily. That's what happens when you pit a bunch of well trained and supplied professional soldiers against an army of disheartened conscripts.

The war did painfully highlight the Brits inability to project power. The Black Buck air raids on the Falklands required nearly all of Britain's strategic bomber and tanker forces, just to bomb them from Ascension Island.
