Going to Gettysburg Tomorrow, what's not to miss?

On our way to a wedding in Pittsburgh, I took the family on a detour to Gettysburg to visit the national park tomorrow. For anyone that's been before, what's not to miss? Looking on the website is seems pretty massive.

Get a whole lot of peppermint schnapps and have cartman dress up as general lee and stage a re-enactment of the battle, except this time the south wins.

it is gona be a long ways out of your way, but if you have an extra couple of days, I would really recommend a trip to philadelphia to see the historical shite there along with a stop in lancaster pennsylvania to check out the amish stuff...

I wish I could, but the wedding has me tied up for the week. This was the one side trip we were able to take. I definitely will make it to Philly another time.

I will already be wearing my red and gray Nicholls hat...

It's been years since I was there. They had tours and observation decks. My family spent some time walking to and visiting the monument to the company from Brooklyn, New York in which one of my great great uncles served.
It's every bit as moving as Arlington Cemetery. You won't regret making the detour. Enjoy and be awed.

There is a really good restaurant out there...I forgot the name of it but it is an old house from the Civil War that was made into a restaurant.
Ill look it up and get back to you.

My youngest brother and his family lives outside of Hershey (about an hour from Gettysburg). There is also a great golf course there called "The Links at Gettysburg". A lot to do there.
The OP is going to be short on time, so I would guess he will limit the day to the battlefield.

We did one of the private tours. Was worth it IMO. Had the guide take us to the Louisiana memorial. Also ate at the cash town inn one night, which served as the confederate HQ there. Maybe do one of the ghost tours in the evening if you like that kind of thing.

That would be awesome, but it's me, the misses and the 2 year old daughter. So were going to spend the day in the park and town and then head to Pittsburgh in the evening.
We thought about spending a day in Hershey but timing wouldn't work for us.
We will be getting the CD for the auto tour, and I've been told the trip to the top of the observation tower is worth it.

The park is big enough to do some walking around, but the main battle site most people go to is right there next to the visitor center, so you shouldn't have any trouble figuring it out. Between the museum and the field you can spend a couple hours, but not much more than that unless you read every word and follow in every footstep. Although I believe the museum has expanded a good deal since I was there last.
There are little cafes in "Downtown" Gburg for casual non-chain dining.
Just be prepared for the gift shops.
It's a pretty area; you'll be driving through farms to get there, seeing trucks and muscle cars that make you feel like you're still in the South.

Go the the High Tide marker and read this:
"For every Southern boy fourteen years old, not once but whenever he wants it, there is the instant when it's still not yet two o’clock on that July afternoon in 1863, the brigades are in position behind the rail fence, the guns are laid and ready in the woods and the furled flags are already loosened to break out and Pickett himself with his long oiled ringlets and his hat in one hand probably and his sword in the other looking up the hill waiting for Longstreet to give the word and it's all in the balance, it hasn't happened yet, it hasn't even begun yet, it not only hasn't begun yet but there is still time for it not to begin against that position and those circumstances which made more men than Garnett and Kemper and Armistead and Wilcox look grave yet it's going to begin, we all know that, we have come too far with too much at stake and that moment doesn't need even a fourteen-year-old boy to think This time. Maybe this time with all this much to lose and all this much to gain: Pennsylvania, Maryland, the world, the golden dome of Washington itself to crown with desperate and unbelievable victory the desperate gamble, the cast made two years ago."

As all the locals to tell you where "the tree" is. It's creepy as frick no matter what time of day you go. A lot of people will act like they don't know what you're talking about but be persistent bc you don't want to miss it. Might as well leave electronics in the car bc they won't work.
Also, when asking you have to pause, lower your voice, lean in and use finger quotations when saying "the tree" or you'll never find it.

Good deal. We'll definitely prefer some local eatery to a chain.
I have my camera and plan on taking a ton of pics. So I'm going to take my time at the park and visit as many sites as possible. It will be a nice break for the little one after 2 days of nonstop driving to get here.

Holden, I thought of that passage at a lecture by the Ghettysburg curator here in Houston a couple years ago. The Q&A was nothing but white haired old gentlemen in coats and ties asking what might have happened if Pickett had done this or Longstreet had done that.

Rented a private guide for a tour and it was awesome. Highly recommend
Also the best part was a night ghost tour. Was soooo cool
We all held lanterns and sat in the attics of different places and the guide told stories. So awesome
