I am thinking this is a small shoal bass or possibly a bartram bass? Someone told me the coloration is different than a redeye. Also looks different than a smallmouth to me.

Any ideas?

That would be very cool to put in an aquarium.

What did you catch it on?

Don't you live in Brookhaven? Let's fish together.

This. I have a few in my pond that I caught out of the Mississippi River.

Now I am thinking this could have been a redeye...

quote:

Characteristics: The redeye or Coosa bass is an elongate, slender fish with a large mouth that extends to or slightly behind the rear margin of the eye. A small tooth patch is present on the tongue. The upper and lower margins of the caudal fin are edged in white, a useful feature for separating redeye bass from both smallmouth bass and shoal bass.

My immediate thought was Kentucky bass, but I don't know if they have them in SC. They are all over the Tangipahoa river

I know what it is not: Kentucky, smallmouth. It's one of those subs that has a very limited range.

Is the eye red? Can't tell from angle.

If so, rock bass.

The eyes were red, but not bright (darker).

Definitely not a smallmouth. Colors are completely wrong. Smallmouth do not have green anywhere on them.

Pretty sure it's a spotted bass

Doesn't look like the red eye bass we used to catch.

That's some small subspecies that I'm not aware of but it sure is a pretty son of a gun.
