Why are my trailer running lights not working?
Posted by laangler21 on 6/8/14 at 1:57 pm00
Rewired the trailer and replaced all lights, I have brakes and signals, but side markers and driver side (license plate light)are not working. I have continuity before and after each light, I did find a blown fuse (15) that I replaced, I didn't have another 15, so went with a 20. Anyone have some insight, or something I am overlooking? TIA

Probably not getting a good ground on the hitch.

Haven't tried that yet, will hit everything with a grinder and see what happens.

95% of trailer wire troubles is the ground.
The other 5% has a 50% chance of being the ground also

05 silverado, when I rewired it I cleaned the ground screw, washer, and nut well. Checked inside the can and under good for fuses, blown was under hood, trlr park I think was the one that was blown.

Trailer lights are one of the world's greatest mysteries

Get a multimeter and check the female end coming from your truck

I would suggest looking to LED trailer lighting if these aren't already LEDs. They are much more reliable and have barely any power consumption.
I agree with the rest of the guys that it sounds like a bad ground.

Man, I hate trailer lights. I think the entire OB has felt that pain many times

Most light kits have a dedicated ground wire so you shouldn't have to worry about grounding at the hitch. Find that dedicated wire and make sure it's properly grounded.
Buy a 12 volt test light. Then you can check the pig tail at the truck and make sure you don't have a blown fuse. If everything works at the pig tail you know the problem is down the line. I agree, change over to LED lights when you can.
