I need to build a device that is photocell triggered and 12 v battery operated to move a relatively light object (metal door) vertically down 10 to 12" and lock in that position until the photocell again triggers retracting the item to its original position and holding it there.

much like a garage door but on the scale of about 12" by 48" by 1/8" thick aluminum.

And I need to do so as cheaply as possible.

Only want those hogs feeding during daylight hours?

Never mind just looked at the size again...

building two high capacity protein free choice feeders for deer that I want to be able to shut at night to force them to feed during the day.

Could you just hook up a timer instead of photocell?

Ok, how fast does it need to be?
I would used 24vdc as it easer to get parts for. Used 2 12vdc batterys with solar charger and a photo cell to open.

Just thinking it through: You need a photocell relay with dry contacts that are capable of making/breaking on the full load amps of the motor. The photocell probably needs a separate power circuit (which can be from the same power source). Wire the motor up through the photocell relay contacts. It needs to have have a separate "up" and "down" start circuit with self contained motor starter. Use the normally closed contact on the "up" start circuit and the normally open contact on the "down" circuit.

Eta: you will probably need to specify the photocell come with normally open and closed contacts (some may only come with normally open contacts). Or you could use some inter posing relays to get around this.

As far as hooking the motor up to the door, you need a mechanical engineer for that shite.

Eta: Oops if the motor is 24vdc you'll power the motor itself (open & close), not a coil.

It would be easier to used timers one to open and one to close. Photo cells don't work as well in cloudy weather.

I fricking hate everything about EE. Gimme a crescent wrench and a snaggle toothed girl and this dude will build you a bridge to the moon

Gimme a capacitor and two AA batteries and I'll fry the power grid for the entire southeastern US

I used the same wiring for my dads chicken coop.

Here the timers I used. LINK

Me too. Got a D in my circuits course.

Sorry BP, I can help you if you wanna drill a well but this kinda thing needs a smart person.

It would actually be better to be slow.

I probably would not be moving more than 5 lbs max. I don't think I will need an actuator quite so large or expensive. Actuator will be weather protected also.

timers would be better than photocell for some reasons but you would have to reset for daylight savings but overall probably better with timers.

I agree with this. Yeah those motors looked bigger than necessary to me too but idk what to type into the search to get what you're looking for. Maybe a solenoid?

I'm wrong on the solenoid apparently. This suggests using a belt or chain.

We could used a smart relay that has daylight saving time built in. Like IDEC LINK

Used a Power Window with a arm for the gate.

This. My circuits course was the only time I've ever contemplated suicide
