it was back and forth in the forth quarter. We led 27-7 at the half. Harvey was having probably the best game of his life until his injury. Ended up being a exciting game though. Remember the last drive when Tulane looked to have intercepted Hodson's short pass over the middle then it was called incomplete? That was the ball game right there.

The carry he went down on put him at 1,001 yds rushing for the season.

Blew his knee out on that old Dome turf in what Barry Switzer used to call a "self-tackleization" injury. Nobody touched him.

I think they used ligaments from his neck to repair his knee.....

I want to say they took a 28-27 lead on us, in the 4th quarter, but I can't be sure. Then 36-34, I know we won 41-36, on the short pass over the middle to I believe it was Eddie Fuller and he ran about 35 yards straight to the goal post.

I've been dying to see that again. It was Tommy Hodson and Terrance Jones playing "can you top this" all night.

I think that Harvey had 199 yards that night. The sad thing is that, as someone else mentioned, he wasn't even touched when he went down. He blew through a huge hole and was 10 - 15 yards downfield before anyone even got near him. He tried to make a cut, caught his foot in a seam and that was that.

I recall that the Tigers were about to score and the play Harvey was injured on was from TU's 2 yard line. Harvey took the ball and tried to cut to his right, and his knee gave out on the cut. This happened near the end of the first half. Whether he got 199 yards in one half I don't recall, but I know he was unstoppable that night.

Turns out that we're both wrong and right in some cases. I pulled up the pdf file of the game from LSUsports.net. Harvey had 181 net yards on 19 carries. He was injured with around 9 minutes remaining in the game. The pdf file includes a written play by play. The last entry involving Harvey reads 3rd and 1 Tulane 13 Williams runs center for 7 yards.

Will never forget this. The hole the line open was so big that I could scored. It was literally 5 yards wide it seemed. He was never touched, he collapsed like someone shot him.

it's been so long ago. i was sitting in the opposite endzone from the end of the field where he was injured. always thought we were closer to the goal line. Thanks for the info on where to find that kind of thing. I didn't know those old records even existed on lsusports.net.

Wish I could say I was at that game. I had just graduated in May87 and was in Baltimore, MD. Had a few other buddies from LSU that were in the area and we literally drove around the beltway in Balto for 3 hours trying to pick up the new orleans radio station that was broadcasting the game...
