Rififi (1955)

Rififi is a French film based on a book about a jewelry store heist. I rarely see classics on this board so I thought I would recommend a good one. A big enthusiastic thumbs up. Check it out if you get the chance.

Yes both of those are great! Le Samourai is another good Melville crime picture.

Rififi is a French movie but it was made by an American director. Jules Dassin who was in France after being blacklisted in America.

Check out some of his American Noirs if yall get the chance.
Night and the City & Thieves' Highway are both great. And The Naked City & Brute Force are pretty damn good too.

Kafka, you disagree with this statement?

This board is 70% tv, and when we do discuss films, it's the same ole'; List you top 10 or Hangover 2 rocks. It's the same crap. Go through the first 10 pages of this board and tell me how many "classics" are discussed.

The actual heist scene in Rififi is awesome.

Well I have tried to start threads in the past -- my TV westerns is only the most recent example -- but they generate virtually no discussion. Even less than my music board threads.

Counting TV episodes and documentaries I must have over 1K YouTube links bookmarked (counting music, probably over 2K). I could post stuff here every day, and in fact I did have a thread called YouTube Pick Of The Day that I added to every other week or so, but it got so little response I eventually let it lapse into lockitude (apparently they are now locking threads after 6 months of inactivity -- it used to be a year). I've considered starting another one, but wasn't sure if there was a point.

There are some people here interested in the classics/old crap, and if we got a bit organized we could at least have some discussions, and maybe even storm the Winter Palace like a few committed Phishoviks did on the Music Board.

Kafka, well said. I agree. And I would have never heard of those two fat foreign sisters who sang folk back in the 60's if it weren't for your creative threads.

I agree completely. Though in the past Kafka and I as well as several others have tried talking about classics here. But as you pointed out most would rather discuss that other crap.

I'm up for talking about classics anytime though.

Constant Cough. How about I change this title to 'French Films' or 'Classic French Films' and we keep this going along with some other informative threads, just let me know what they are.

I'll add a couple of suggestions: Elevator to the Gallows (1958) and La Cercle Rouge (1970)

One of the best. It still holds up today.

I enjoy those discussions as well. And I enjoy Kafka's non-Phish threads. I need to participate more and stay away from the Poliboard.
