I am thinking about upgrading my OS. I mainly just game, stream, and surf on my desktop. Will upgrading to Windows 8.1 benefit me in anyway?

TIA

My media center pc has Windows 8.1...its not bad as long as you install classic shell.. Gives you your start menu with everything else pretty much identical to 7.

Windows 8.1. Classic Start menu week be back in next update. Faster boot times, easier to stream media over other devices, windows defender is to notch (haven't had a single virus or malware in over a year and I visit non ligit sites), no more Aero wasting battery, and metro apps that use less resources than native

No IMO. 8 may run slightly faster, but it's really not noticeable if you have a decent machine to begin with. If you have a shitty netbook or something you might notice a difference.

I could use 32GB real quick if I was running a small virtualized lab environment. But then I'd go windows 8.1 for hyper-v

I have no desire to upgrade to 8 on my windows partition. I've "used" it before but feel completely illiterate on it. With the classic startup I may consider. I have SSD drive and 16GB ram, so I doubt I'd notice any improvements. Is it a free upgrade? If not when will Microsoft get on that bandwagon? Ever?

Windows 8 also has extended backdoor capabilities over 7.

Based on your description, there's no benefit. There's also no drawbacks other than cost. If you're a student, and it is free, go ahead and upgrade. If you're paying full price, I would recommend against it.

8.1 is made for touchscreen.

Stick to 7 if you don't have one.

That was one of the few times when it would have helped to notice who you're replying to.
