Bought a car last night and during the final paperwork the guy was trying to tell me I should do it after I get out of the military. I just finished recruiting and working on a business degree. Any ways he told me dealers in the area are making 100k and with experience you get put in the finance department making up to 160k (just with a HS diploma)

Thoughts?

So the dealers sell drugs to the salesmen?

By dealers I assume you meant salesmen.....and yes, 100k is possible but work hours aren't. You work, rain or shine and most weekends.
Finance is absolutely the job to have, but they don't give those away, especially at larger dealerships. The finance guys are the closers and ususally get the buyer to agree to a lot of extra items like extended warranties. It takes experience and closing talent.

Hours and conditions don't bother me, while recruiting I was working the 7 days a week 100+ hours. I am comfortable now but was just asking what others thought or if anyone on here has done it.

Also it's not screwing someone over, if you're a moron you deserve to get screwed. Can't blame a car dealer for someone having shirty credit then agreeing to a 24%+ interest rate.

As with any sales position, you're take home could kick arse, but your per hour might blow.

100k at 40-50 hours a week is nice.

100k at 100 hours a week sucks.

at least I'm not dumb enough to believe what a used car salesman told me, especially when he says you could make 160k selling 5-year-old Hyundais

enjoy finally being an OT baller...dipshit

Have a family friend who works at a luxury car dealership along with her father in sales. She said her per year is about 130k in a large metro area and her dad's is even more.

She also works 8-7 M-Sat plus some Sundays. Says it is stressful month to month and wouldn't recommend it to most people. Trying to make the move into the finance department as most people are suggesting.

Got to be good, got to be ready to make the time commitment. If you can do it though, you can make bank

I bumped into the guy who sold my wife and me our GMC Acadia. He had apparently left his job, and he was at a gas station delivering Little Debbie goods to the store at that station. He told me it had always been his dream to sell Little Debbie's. He actually gouged us on the car, so I am the real loser of this story

Anyway, he left his sales job to deliver cakes, so I imagine selling cars must have sucked, even when he was able to sucker me to a high price.

Are salesmen employees of the dealership or independent contractors? Do they get any benefits?

Huh?

Is it just me or is there a slight pedophile smell to dreaming of something related to Little Debbie?

I sold boats, it was a great income, hours were lousy but many of my friends the same age (mid 20's) were working similar hours for 1/3 the money.

Some of the training I did was with car sales guys, like any industry there are tons of guys who don't do well and don't have much to show for their time. There are guys making $200,000 and even $400,000 as car salesmen though, I certainly wouldn't say its a bad field based on those who don't succeed at it.

You shouldn't expect to make 100k. The most successful sales people can make this much, but you will need time to get good at it and build your customer base. It's not unreasonable to get over 50k if you apply yourself. Also, getting promoted to finance manager is far from a sure thing, even if you're a great at sales, it doesn't necessarily mean you'd be good at finance. Don't listen to people saying that sales men have to screw people out of money, not the case.
