I never understood the point of this. Maybe I guess to judge whether you're an actual competent writer- but honestly, it's a waste of time IMO.

What does it contain that my resume doesn't besides me saying "I want this job".

Nobody cares. Why submit this?

I put it all out there in a cover letter.

They can read it if they want to or not. Come the interview, I'll know if they read it or not, because I will make references to it such as "Like I said in my cover letter...".

However you feel about it, if you aren't submitting them and everyone else is, chances are they're going to take the others before you. If definitely just feels likes a formality, though.

Depends, it usually is.

But for example, as a young lawyer, my resume is packed into one page. There isn't enough space to summarize the types of depos I take or the complexity of litigation I've worked on. Cover letters can help in that regard.

I'll go a step further and say that the whole interview process is a worthless waste of time. Usually the person doing the interviewing doesn't know a fricking thing about the position, so there's no way they can judge someone's competency. Human resources is some made up shite.

The cover letter is a weapon. I don't expect that to resonate with many here but it is a drone in a world of muzzle loaders.

This is when it's really useful. As a fresh graduate, I couldn't fit everything on a one page resume, so I used the cover letter as a extension further explaining my skills relevant for the position.

It shows that the person actually took the time to understand what they're applying for and articulate how their background is applicable.

if i had to hire somebody which i never do, i'd just want one page with bullet points short and sweet. no way i'd read a cover page and if the resume was wordy, i'd skip that too.

Yea, keep it short, sweet, and too the point. I know they are frustrating, but come on, it's less than a page. It shouldn't take you long.

Wow! At the bottom of this thread for me is an ad for free cover letter templates. How do they do it?

Feels like its more important than the resumes I've sent, at least for the jobs I've applied to. Most employers I've met don't give a crap about resumes.

And if your cover letters say:

quote:

What does it contain that my resume doesn't besides me saying "I want this job".

than your doing it wrong. Your cover letter should not rehash your resume or repeat much information that's on your resume.

I've never used one. What's the point? A letter telling them you want to work for them? No shite, that's why they have your résumé in the first place.
