Obviously everybody on the OT has at least 2 bachelor degrees and a masters... But the hard reality is not everybody is an OT baller. Trash does exist and we all know it's a lot harder to find a solid middle class career in 2014 than it was 20-30 years ago.

Here is my situation: Like probably a million other kids every year I went off to college and had just a little bit too much fun and didn't make it to class as often as I should have. Lost my funding and the plan was to work for a year and save money and pay my own way back to school. As often happens in life, a few curveballs were thrown my way. Ended up with a truck note, rent payment and all the other bills that go along with adulthood (electric, water, insurance, cell phone) and 3 years later I'm still working the same service job I got when I moved back home. I've plateaued here and the only possible way to move up would be partial ownership, which likely isn't happening anytime soon. I make enough to cover the bills, but not much else. Definitely not enough for any school.

Financial help from parents isn't an option. Grandparents are all dead.

Anybody have any suggestions on how to better myself? How hard is it to get work on an oil rig? I'm open to moving anywhere and starting completely over.

TL;DR - answer the question in the title. Going back to school isn't option for now, neither is help from parents.

have any contacts in the businesses you work with? Just try to network with different people you come across. Also, maybe touch base with a headhunter/job finders agency and they can tell you what they think and see if they can get you some interviews.

Get working in plants through one of the local contractors, get a trade, get sponsored to go to trade school. Maybe become an operator or something like that.

Oilfield is always hiring

Only bad thing is it seems you have a stable job. Willing to risk that for a few hitches in the gulf, only to find out you're not up for that life style?

I know a girl that is finishing up a welding program and she's about to make bank on a rig. Find a welding program in your area.

what are your thoughts on joiniing the military?

clearly you are open to the job and you can go to school for free afterwards if you still want too.

Join the national guard as soon as possible. Get an Mos that relates to the real world. And don't ever get out of the guard. They paid for my school when I went back. I have my degree and a veteran. I got out because I was young and dumb. Now I wished I'd stayed.
