I know this can't be Germans-we only have 9 days to get-er done, and at least the first 2 were blown out. Debating joining what is sure to be a huge boat parade this weekend to try and capture some of these rare, elusive and endangered creatures.

Isn't the Helldivers Rodeo also this weekend? Fourchon and GI are going to be cluster-you-know-whats. I think I would consider launching out of Cocodrie and making the extra boat ride if I go.

Huh? You know snapper live well within the 9 geographical mile state boundary, right? You've been able to catch snapper since March. Screw the feds. If anything, I would actively avoid fishing for snapper right now and pick it back up once the fed season closes.

Not saying I won't try my luck a time or two, but the people I know who have been inspected by coast guard out of Fourchon were told that they'll be writing federal tickets to anyone they find with snapper out of season, state boundary or not.

I keep hearing this but haven't met anyone who got a ticket. Any OBers actually gotten written up? Everyone I know has been given a verbal warning and some were even required to turn over the fish when they were between the federally recognized boundary (3 geographical miles) and the state recognized boundary (9 geographical miles), but noone has been ticketed.

Furthermore, if you make it back inside the 3 geographical miles, you definitely won't be written a ticket since both state and federal recognize that as state waters and they couldn't prove you caught them in the disputed zone or further out.

Fair enough. Until the federal legislation is passed recognizing the new 9 geographical mile state boundary this will continue to be an issue. I'm sure on big weekends there is more of a presence than on weekdays, but everyone should be careful regardless.

I think it just depends on if you're being searched by an a-hole or not. They could technically write the ticket even within the 3-mile territory. According to these folks, the guys who inspected them weren't just dicks about snapper.

That depends on where you fish. Also, the 9 mile boundary is still disputed. I have too much on the line professionally to deal with that kind of dispute.

What kind of fines are they getting?

You sure about that? It's the same as redfish at that point. Once you're inside state waters, you're under state WLF jurisdiction as far as keeping fish is concerned. NMFS/USCG doesn't write tickets to people with redfish inside state boundaries even though they are not allowed to be kept in federal waters...

I'm not 100% on that, but I've always been told it's the same as pot in legal states. Feds could swoop in anytime they want and arrest people, regardless of state law.

Prettymuch how I see it. I'm all for fighting the feds through the legal channels, but I'm not about to go in front of a judge over saltwater bream.

It's obviously not stopping people hell I still catch them it's kind of a luck of the draw deal at one point I heard the fines were 250 bucks per fish no idea how accurate that is though
