What Does it take for a Movie to be Rated NC-17?

I'm watching a documentary about the Friday the 13th films and how the MPAA butchered (pun intended) so many of the scenes due to the amount of gore. In the years since, nothing they did compares to the torture-porn horror films of today. If the Human Centipede didn't get an NC-17 I don't know what does. Has the MPAA eased up over the years?

Kinda hilarious that a film adaptation of The Canterbury Tales is on that list.

Chaucer still too shocking for the MPAA after all these years.

There's a documentary on netflix about the movie ratings process. It's completely under wraps and inconsistent

They get a random group of old people together to decide what's wrong with movies and if it's too bad for this rating or another.

In Friday the 13th 5, the MPAA compromised and said we will let you show more boobs if you take out the eye gouge scene.

I caught the end of a Matthew McConaughey and Emile Hersch movie Saturday called Killer Joe that was NC17. The 10-15 minutes I saw made me not want to see the rest of it.

I'd be willing to bet a signiifcant number of movies that are released at R, were initially given NC-17 ratings and the producers either appealed the rating to get an R or made a few cuts

Ever notice how almost every R rated comedy/horror film these days is always "unrated" when released to DVD?

Been saying this for a while now. You're exactly right. Way too many inconsistencies about it all.

Unrated video release =/= NC-17 Rating.

Just sayin'

Go watch This Film is Not Yet Rated. It might still be on Netflix.

Like the other poster said, it basically shows how god awful the rating system is.

It is extremely arbitrary and inconsistent, and if the documentary is true it is a corrupt process that has a lot of say how well a film does.

If you are given an NC-17 rating your potential revenue is cut exponentially.

It takes hardcore sex or non stop nudity like in Showgirls to get an NC-17 rating these days. The old ladies on the ratings board don't mind blood and guts as much.

After watching The Wolf of Wall Street this weekend, I don't know what they could have taken out to get it down to R. That movie had boobs and F-bombs flying everywhere.

The ratings board doesn't frick with a guy as big in Hollywood as Scorcesse. It's a corrupt and inconsistent process.

This, big time. Sheds light on how much of a complete fricking sham the ratings board is. Also, google Trey Parker and Matt Stone's thoughts on the MPAA ratings system...it's pretty hilarious, and they are dead on in their criticisms of the process. I don't remember if it was in the doc quoted above or a random clip I saw, but them talking about the ratings process for SP:B,L,&U and Team America is greatness.

To me that has always been the most fricked up thing about movie ratings.

Seeing endless amounts of people getting shot to death in PG-13 flicks has got to be far worse for a young viewer's mind than a few seconds of boobs they might catch in an R rated flick.

I watched a documentary on the rating system a while back. It seems like there is a lot of politics that goes into it. At least that was what the documentary would lead you to believe.

ETA: I see This Film is Not Yet Rated has already been discussed.
