How to download apps on an Apple TV?

I need some help with this.
I have an Apple TV 2 and I'm trying to download the Watch ESPN app.
I typed it all in correctly in the browser and it comes up (the exact same screen you'd see if you were using ESPN3) but to watch anything I have to download the app.
So I go down to the "download from iTunes" button and click that, I get a little bar at the top right of the screen on the tv that says "downloading 'x' amount of 150 items but when it finishes and reads "finished downloading," there's nothing on the screen at all. It's just blank. There's nothing to click on or anything.
Anyone have any help about this? I have to just be leaving a step out or something.
ETA: I don't have the App Store picture icon on the screen when I go to the main menu, that's why I used the browser.

You don't download apps to the Apple TV, yet. It's all done through software updates for the Apple TV itself.
