I have always gone with Spotify, aside from a month long stint trying out Rdio (I found their library lacking). Recently, I realized that you could upload 20,000 songs of your own music to Google's cloud.

Now that I have my library uploaded to Google, I was wondering if I should make the move to All Access and drop Spotify. Does anybody have experience with both? Does All Access have the extensive library that Spotify does?

what is your data plan for your phone?

google music EATS THE frick out of some data. you'll be over 2GB on google music in a week driving back & forth to work with it on 'normal' mode.

but its saving grace is (a) the 20k songs you just mentioned and (b) its ability to 'pin' your favorites to your phone's memory and (c) its 'listen to tracks on device only' which may include lots of music you didn't realize you had on your phone since it caches music you play.

in short, i use the hell out of google play on my car stereo via bluetooth.

i dont have the 'all access' although i tried it for one month at $7.99 so i'm grandfathered into that rate if i ever pick it up again.

eta you get one month free of all access right?? try it out..i found the music library is pretty vast..on par with spotify.

I don't drive much for work, and my work pays for my phone, but I always wondered if they would get on to me if I used up some data. I stream via my Chrome Cast exclusively through my phone so I can use my tablet freely. Would think that would raise an eyebrow eventually, but maybe they DGAF.

I weep for the day I pay my own cell phone and have to drive to an office.

10G Shared with 1 other (I only use mobile while away from the house or work, so I we have been hitting just under 7G a month).

Do you have any experience with Spotify or other streaming services? Does it eat more data than them? I noticed that I can degrade the quality on All Access to save data.

I've used both. They both have the same music unless there are some spotify unplugged sessions (not really major). I stuck with all access though bc it let's you upload your own music. This is useful bc some albums are not available for streaming.

One of the reasons all access uses so much data is that it pre downloads the next few songs that are in Queue. So if you are switching tracks from one artist to another, you can blow through your data.

Also I prefer the layout of the app for all access over spotify. It lack social features though

So if I just go into setting and turn of "cache during playback" I should be good in the data department?

No, cache just stores the music you recently streamed onto your phone temporarily. This does not add to your data usage since you have already downloaded the data for the song. I would keep that on if you usually listen to the same songs often.

I don't know of an option that stops this on the app. I think it's usually Calle "gapless playback". Not sure if spotify does the same thing.

well sonuva..that makes sense.

i routinely would start an album then get bored a couple songs in and switch to a new one.

no wonder it was gobbling data even on low quality.

i would have to switch to pandora which is a data miser oftentimes.

I tried out the others besides All Access and they felt the same. The only reason I am sticking with Google is because I got grandfathered in the old rate and have made an extensive playlist that I don't feel like writing down to download.
