We've pulled the trigger on a center console Gator-Tail and we're trying to figure out which unit to get. Mainly looking a Humminbird and Lowrance. We'll use the boat for duck hunting and fishing the marsh as well as some lakes in central and south LA so we want good gps functionality, but also want one that is useful for finding fish/depth/structure. Most of the units we're looking at have the 5" screen, but I don't know if that's big enough for my FIL to see and read accurately. Would like to get suggestions/advice from those that have experience with the combo units. Thanks in advance.

One of the units recommended to us is the Humminbird 688...seems like it would do the job, but I'm not sure about the size of the screen.

If you want to use Standard Mapping (and believe me you do), Lowrance HDS is the way to go. The guys at Standard Mapping will help with your decision if you want those maps.

What would be the benefit of the HDS Gen 2 over the Elite 7 Chirp or Elite 7 HDI? Looks like it has structure scan and wireless potential. I don't want to get crazy with electronics on a marsh rig/mud boat...I'm just not sue how much is overkill for this kind of set-up.

I just ordered my Gator Tail 18/54 center console last week, and I am also lookin for a good Gps/Fishfinder unit. I have not seen the Elite unit in action, but this past weekend I was on a boat with a Gen2 HDS7 with Standard Mapping and it is a very high quality picture. I have several weeks to make my decision and plan on doing some homework before I do. Let me know what you decide or find out.

10-4. Seems like the standard mapping data is what a lot of ppl use..and I think it only works with Lowrance. I heard cabelas has a sale on some of their products this wknd so well go see what they have. Just not too sure what kind of help we'll get from there with regard to answering our questions.

Are you having yours installed or doing it yourself? Do they use a bracket that allows the transducer to be moved up when running thru heavy trash or just fixed location. This is a question I forgot to ask.

Congrats on the new rig. We're excited about ours.

I will be installing my own. I fished the Gator-Tail tournament this past weekend, and there was a guy who had a 18/54 center console that GT installed a Lowrance and the bracket hung just below the rear hull on the right. It was a brand new boat and the guy said he had not hit anything yet but the bracket should just ratchet up. And if you know you’re running in mud just tilt it up before. I'm mostly just want it for the GPS and when in deeper water look for structure. I went to Cabela's last night on the way home. They were of little help, what they told me I already knew. But you can do all the hands on you want and learn for yourself.

Cabelas/Lowrance are running rebates thru June 15th on the HDS 7 Gen2 with Structure Scan...with $300 rebate its $1,000. Only thing I don't like is having to install 2 transducers with the structure scan. What I've been reading about Humminbird are issues with GPS functionality, but it only requires a single transducer. Guess I'm leaning towards Lowrance for several reasons...reputation, standard mapping SD card compatibility, etc.

Looks like the Humminbird 998 is going to be more expensive than the HDS 7 Gen2 with structure scan, unless you found somewhere to buy it on the cheap...
