What's the best way?

Just rinse with water, use soap and water, or use some kind of homemade solution (vinegar/water, etc).

I typically shower when I get out of the bed each morning using a soap and rag method of cleansing my epidermis while one application of shampoo then a conditioner application.

If I guzzle too much I normally just hose myself off in the back yard

Soap, hot water, more hot water to rinse the soap out.

ETA: Or just run them through the dishwasher, I've never had a problem doing this.

Or let someone take the last bit home and they return them cleaned.

Except 4miles, that fricker returns them dirty.

ETA: be sure to let it COMPLETELY dry. Any moisture will make it smell like death once it is capped for a few days.

Never, ever use soap or detergent.

Rinse immediately with hot water. Rinse several times and then turn upside down on a drying rack. Once dry put the cap back on and store until ready to be used again.

Immediately before the growler is filled it will be sanitized on site using a chemical sanitizer. Using soap or detergent can leave residues which will affect the beer when the growler is used again.

never thought about that, I guess

I'm not sure I've ever re-used a growler, so it's never been an issue

I've got several and a few of them have been refilled a few dozen times I'm sure.

And since were discussing them, if given a choice get the swing top growler instead of a screw on top. The screw tops dont hold seals as well in my experience.

You can use unscented Oxyclean. I let my soak overnight, rinse thoroughly and let dry upside down on a rack or like me, in a wire bicycle basket w/ a towel placed in the bottom.

I will use soap about every six or so fills. Even then, only a little bit. Then you have to fill, shake, pour, fill, shake, pour until you're blue in the face. But it makes me feel better.

I've never gotten any soap flavor, FWIW
