quote:

Minnesota a week ago passed a medical marijuana law, and 14 other states have reform bills or ballot initiatives on the table: Arizona, Hawaii, Maryland, Massachusetts, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, and Wisconsin.

Meanwhile, 12 states and the District of Columbia are considering decriminalization: Alabama, Arizona, Hawaii, Illinois, Louisiana, Michigan, Missouri, New Hampshire, New York, North Carolina, South Carolina and Wyoming.

And 11 states are considering legislation to establish effective medical marijuana programs: Florida, Kansas, Kentucky, Hawaii, Michigan, New York, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, West Virginia, and Wisconsin.

Three states are even considering allowing industrial hemp cultivation: Indiana, New York and Tennessee.

It's crazy to me that hemp cultivation for industrial purposes is just now being considered.

quote:

"It’s definitely a clear shift in public attitude on this issue," said Mason Tvert, communications director for the Marijuana Policy Project, a group spearheading the coordination of state efforts. "A lot of legislators are more open, they’re holding more hearings, they’re emboldened."

ETA: just realized this way a May 22 article... RA if already posted

Legalization will come down to two things only, money and institutional inertia.

Legal weed is a boon for taxes and we all know gov't loves to get as many bites at the tax apple as they can. If they legalized weed in Nola, the state of Louisiana would really be raking it in. LA is a very poor state and not exactly awash with cash. We could use that to build and improve roads, put it into higher education and so on.

Institutional inertia is filling by the wayside as the years pass and more states get this done. The states are flexing their muscles and getting the Feds to back off of this.

Agreed. Money is the main factor that, I'll be be honest, I didn't see coming. I knew it would bring tax revenue but Colorado is rolling in dough. States where tourism is a huge money maker should be the first to keep the ball rolling.

Decriminalization in NH tabled until 2015 legislative session.

That's a shame. We need to get legalization nationwide and move on to bigger and better things with all the money we'll save not fighting a losing battle. Not to mention the money we will make and jobs we will add to the market.

Wow! That is, word for word exactly what they said back when they were arguing for legalization of riverboat gambling.

The next move should be tax cuts on income, property, etc.

That's incredibly naive. Look at all the money in Louisiana. We have lots of oil, gas, refineries, agriculture, the MS river, seafood industry, tourism, and lots of Federal $$$ for projects. Yet, like you said we are a poor state. Why would marijuana make that much of a difference? It'll be a much smaller industry than the other industries already mentioned.

The police agencies will grab most of that money (for your protection). The rest will be spent subsidizing select companies through some sort of megafund.

The state loses more $$$ on the film tax credits than it would ever receive in tax revenues from pot sales.

I think you hit the nail on the head. Its not just any tax revenue, that will be relatively small, but the savings from not arresting pot heads or incarcerating them... not to mention ruining the earning prospects and general good livelihood of someone caught smoking a joint by the wrong officer.

Not just decriminalization, but they voted against decriminalization of a strain of doctor prescribed medical marijuana that does not have any euphoric properties.

As was stated by another poster, it was how naive (or flippantly) you continued with.....
quote:

We could use that to build and improve roads, put it into higher education and so on.

... as if that would actually happen.
