This just in: Google plans to spend $1 billion to cover the entire globe with satellites weighing less than 250 pounds, extending Internet access to unwired regions of the world. Sources close to Google are reporting that access will even extend to Holly Beach. LINK

Would be nuts if Google can pull this off.

Last stat I saw, about a third of the worlds population has internet access. Google could potentially become the ISP for billions of people.

God forbid Google and Elon Musk ever get together on a project of this scope. Its scary what they could accomplish.

Those sub-Saharan African kids are going to love being able to google pictures of food that they don't have.

On devices they will never be able to afford. I am a Bo-leiver while the internet is extremely valuable in its uses and functionality, it's also extremely worthless until you reach a certain level of civilization, of which tribal sun-Saharan African kids need to be brought up to first.

How crazy would it be to live a in a world where your phone had power but your house didn't? If Google is launching satellites I think they can afford to put up a few solar charging stations around town.

Coming from Google, I would imagine that it would probably be pretty good. It would also be a game changer literally for a lot of Americans who are still forced to either use dial up or satellite because they live in in rural areas. You can get decent speeds with satellite, but latency is ridiculous and that can't be changed because of the speed of light and the fact that those satellites orbit thousands of miles in space. With those things floating only 12 miles up internet gaming would be possible anywhere.
