I was noticing the other day that 99% of my time is spent in s browser using Google docs or running apps on my phone.

My wife has an iPad.

Honestly the only exe files I use are the Plex server, utorrent and maybe paint.net. all of those could be made into apps.

I do use it to store the photos and videos but those are also synced to the cloud.

I told my son to learn how program with SQL, CSharp, html5 and build a few android apps and he's good to go.

Don't really see the point of desktop apps anymore.

As long as the trend makes desktops cheaper, I'm all for it.

I own 2 PCs a windows home server and 2 laptops and my son has a mac daddy alienware Aurora.

However other than a few aging apps like Photoshop and flash and of course steam I don't see the reason for having a PC.

Google docs is the best thing to happen to business in 10 years. We use it at work and unless I have something really technical to do in excel google docs wins every time. Its that good.

At home I'd tend to agree. At the workplace, not really.

The PC gaming community would disagree as does almost the entire business community.

I guess this would very by industry. CAD and engineering apps still mostly desktop based?

To be honest my company isn't thrilled my group is using Google docs but we're not doing anything mission critical and the collaborative and search capabilities have made our jobs easier and they've agreed with that.

As long as desktop hardware is more powerful and cheaper than mobile hardware, power users will always have a need for them.

I run AutoCad so I spend 90% of my time on a desktop. I could run AutoCad on a laptop with a connected large monitor.

I think you're missing a huge part of computing if you discount desktops for having any sort of pull on the market.

I think desktops are amazing. I've never owned a laptop because you can't match the power of a desktop, so what's the point. When I go to work, I just bring a jump drive as my "laptop".

I can customize and upgrade my desktop for years after I purchase the main components, which makes it cheaper than a laptop or tablet.

They are very versatile as well.

I don't think they will ever go away. It's where computing started and where it will remain. Once I got a T1 connection in college, the computer replaced the TV for how I got information, and it's remained the same ever since. Way back then, I had a brand new Dell desktop that ran Windows XP. I had that thing form 2002 to 2010, and in 2010 I built a computer, which still runs everything under the sun. I haven't even replaced a single component in that machine. That cost about $900.

Let's say $1500 of computing power split over 12 years...that's not bad!

You didn't have a T1 connection in college unless it was supplied by the university to a dorm.

PC is actually killing the market right now producing more revenue than consoles.
